#1 Post by Mushroomhermit »

Where is the file path for character dumps defined? My computer seems to be making them in a non-existent location or something and I really want to brag about my winner :(

It should be in your home/T-Engine/4.0/tome/character-dumps/ (it should tell you so when you make the dump)

Yeah, unfortunately that doesn't appear to exist so I don't really know where its sticking them (searches also turn up nil) so I'd like to be able to define my own save path...

LINUX is a pain sometimes... Wish I was better with it.

Ah you're on linux ? then it's in your home/.t-engine/4.0/tome/character-dumps/

Files and directories starting with a . are hidden by default on linux, to access it you can simply type the directory in your file explorer

Or select the "show hidden directories" in your file explorer. IIRC Gnome does this with the shortcut CTRL+H (no guarante, I'm sitting on a WinXP machine right now so I can't look it up ;)).

Welcome to Tales of Middle Earth!
I was working with a kinda new LOS tactic for handling dangerous monsters (The Master, Orc bosses, GMHWs) that worked pretty well so I never felt the need to use aoes for anything aside from grabbing whole nests to beam down more quickly. The strategy ended up working so well that the only bosses that I had to even take a step against were Ukllmswwik (he seems to be immune to phase door and is thus much more difficult to control) and Fyrk (there was no terrain to set up the strat).

I think the Western World has had plenty of attention and feels pretty close to where it needs to be. Maybe add an archer or 2 to the icy/fiery wyrmic orc stacks to make them a little more dangerous for archers, but otherwise the difficulty scales up pretty smoothly to Tol Falas.

As for the East...

Spider Cave
Didn't have any trouble here. The elites were few and far between and not particularly dangerous compared to similar level casters in the Orc Prides. The regular monsters were pushovers and again, found mostly in 2s and 3s.

Necromancer Pride
I lost my previous lvl 20+ archmage to an Orc Corrupter here so this time around I came in very cautious. Targeted phase door kept me out of trouble with all of the empty buildings in the area and the nice big rectangles made perfect LOS systems for me so that once I nailed down my basic strategy, I made pretty steady and non-panicky progress. A couple things that would have gummed up my machinery would have been targeted summons (Orc necromancer summons a ghoulking... ON TOP OF YOU!!!), a higher concentration of monsters spawning inside the buildings, and injured monsters calling for help and stirring up other groups in the level. All of those would make me hate you.

Dragon Pride
I've read all of the talk about GMHWs and I played ToME 2 and many other *bands so I know how dangerous a capital D can be. I treated them like bosses. Never saw a breath weapon. If they could summon other elite dragons I'm pretty sure they would be quite a bit more terrifying. As it is now though, they represented the only real threat in the dragon pride for me. Other than the occasional high cryo/pyromancer, I more or less machine gunned a way to the next set of stairs. the same suggestions for the Necro Pride apply here only... more so. I want to say a prayer before I go into a dragon's den.

Fighter Pride
This place was a nightmare. Short tunnels, no lighting, irregular rooms and hordes of fighters with Rush and Stunning Blow. My only high risk teleport was used here and I got *lucky*. Time Prison saved my butt a few times too. I would only make 2 suggestions here. Make the boss spawn with an elite fighter and elite berserker and make the dungeon persist (it was regenerating everything, including level layout, when I used the stairs. Same with the Dragon and Mage prides). Kudos DG... I barely made it out alive.

Mage Pride
Essentially the same as the Dragon Pride. The few elites were my only concern and they never came in large enough numbers for me to ever feel stressed. If they had telepathy, boss-style pathing, and gave off an aura that woke up nearby monsters... scary. Especially if an Umberhulk happens to be with them.

Unremarkable Cave
Breezed through it... Felt like a mini Tol Falas without a pink V lurking at the end. I figure you want this place to be more for flavor than a character-killer. I saved the orc this time around though. Any plans on adding a reward? I was hoping my next guy would get to be an Orc Berserker.

Underwater Cave
Felt a lot like the Spider Cave. Squads of Nagas (maybe patrolling around?) would have made it tougher. I liked the boss fight a lot though. His phase door immunity had me fleeing quite a bit and the extra monsters added some complexity while they lasted. If the 4 corners of the room spawned Nagas or even aquatic critters while the boss is alive, it would have been quite a bit more challenging.

Eruan
No problems here. The Ritches gave me no trouble despite their fire immunity. If they could multiply or could move faster they might have been more of a concern. Lots of random trees made avoiding large pulls pretty easy. I moved through here fast.

Mount Doom
Just to see if it was possible, I phase doored through here avoiding all of the monsters except for 1 pack of baby dragons. I made it to Fyrk with about 500 turns remaing :D . Fyrk was scary though. I could barely break LOS for a few turns, his attacks were ranged and he was immune to 1/3 of my direct damage spells. The only problem is that once he used Inferno, he couldn't do much damage to me. I ended up just phase dooring a good distance away and machine gunning him while drinking potions and casting regenerate. Essence of Speed gave me enough free actions that he just couldn't burn me down.

TLDR

The Fighter Pride is ScArY!!!

As I suggested for the monk class?

Anyway nice dump. I lost my EoS build to an orc corruptor in the necromancer pride. I think I should have hit it up later but I 'thought' I had Blood of Life and was playing a bit reckless because of it (I think a bug ate my blood of life though as I brought up in another thread).

Overall I found EoS kinda meh . It doesn't seem to scale with magic like the tooltip suggests (never went over 45%) and 250 mana means you're stuck with single target nukes for the most part which is fine for the first part of the game but started to be a pain in 'open levels'.

Sense and Phase Door seemed really OP to me for the first half of the game. Never having to fight more then one monster at a time except when you go down a flight of stairs is kinda cheesy. But the open levels in the East made that strategy less viable so I can't say for sure that it's 'broken'.

I never felt like sticking to single target nukes was a problem. I was always very careful of only fighting 1 dangerous monster at a time though. Sense and Phase door felt very powerful to me later on since I could find a safe tunnel/corner/room and pull all the tricky monsters out of a group and pick them off one by one. I think the biggest lifesaver was always remembering to cast sense right before taking stairs down so that I knew where all the enemies were as soon as I entered a level.

edit
@Shoob

If you're talking about making the monsters more difficult, I'm not really sure that simply making them last longer will do the job. I think if ranged npcs would focus on moving into LoS as quickly as possible rather than just moving towards you until they just happen to get LoS, then they would be way trickier and my clever tactics would be thwarted. Also if melee npcs used cover they would be a lot harder to beat. Not sure how possible it would be to work those changes into the AI but they would make the Prides in particular a lot more dangerous.

You're spell power was way higher then mine though. Granted I died at level 23 but still I see a 50 point gap. It looks like you had much better drops too.

In other words, Manathrust and Flame didn't keep up as well as I'd hoped and eventually I had to turn off EoS because I was losing my extra turns quaffing mana pots anyhow and running out of pots ;)

But yeah, I tackled the necromancer pride first and that may have been a bad idea.

*edit* The sense idea is smart too. I think that would have actually saved my character. Coming down stairs and phase dooring blind into an occupied room was what got him killed.

I do think melee needs more ways to deal with casters in general. Both player and npc wise but armor reducing spell damage might not be the solution since it'll mostly just help sword and board types. What I said in the monk idea though was that monks should have their abilities output penalized by fatigue and that might not be a bad idea for spell casters. Granted it'd hit Arcane Blades pretty hard but maybe they could have a talent added that lessened or removed the penalty?

I was using a 15 spell power yew staff until after the first Pride and obviously I didn't have the fiery choker for most of it. One of the orbs gives +6 magic when carried too. I really think the only very solid drop I had was the staff. The 90 mana is what allowed me to use EoS and the -40 mana ring and 22 spell power is nothing to laugh at.

I wish cryo/pyromancers were easier to unlock. I really want to try them.

You might want to try maxing lightning out too. Having 2 powerful beams and an option to drop flame for another nuke if the target has massive fire resist was very helpful.

Well done!
You came out lower level than I'd have expected though, but well maybe it's fine.

As for the zones:
Spider Cave: yeah I know they are much easier than I wanted to, I'll tweak them

Rak'Shor: I agree, if when you teleported a monster away it alerted others in sight it could be much more ... mhh .. fun

Gorbat: I ponder how I can make drakes harder, and they should breath .. hmmmm

Grushnak: Yeah this is probably the worst place for a caster, it's also the highest level pride

Unremarkable Cave: not meant to be deadly yes, and there will eventually be a rewardfor saving the orc

Flooded Cave: you killed the boss without taking the quest? I'd have openned a new zone with many naga :)

Eruan: Ah yes faster speed is in theme with my idea of Ritches

Mount Doom: I had planned to make all teleports only work bakwards in there, so you can use them to save yourself but not to gain time

Speaking of scary I'm sure you'll just LOVE the High Peak and the various new major demons that come with the new quest & zone :)

PS: check out the thread about your troll gfx please :)
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD

[tome] phantomfrettchen: your ability not to tease anyone is simply stunning ;)

Yeah, I considered maxing lightning too.

If I give EoS another shot I'll try that.

Right now I'm goofing around with a joke build. Going to max the defensive talents and Ice Storm and dump all my generic points after maxing phase door and sense into weapon combat and sword mastery. Then beat things to death with Ringil while Ice Storm is going.

I don't expect the character to live long or do very well but it's a build I've been wanting to try out for awhile now.

@ Darkgod - If when you teleported a monster away it alerted others in sight it could be much more ... mhh .. fun.

I agree with this whole heartily. Also the mob itself should probably be alerted that it's been moved and the target range and effect range on phase door should match (I used Sense and multiple phase doors to pull Ungole from several screens away and took a break in between because she didn't care that someone was moving her around).

@DG

I'm probably lower level than you expected because I was playing a skeleton. As for the quest in the water cave, I never got anything. I just walked up to the dragon, opened a dialogue with him and clicked *attack*. I'm playing a freaking skeleton archmage (i.e. Lich). I'm not going to chat with something before I end it

Also, I think the GMHWs would have been more than happy to breath on me if I gave them a chance to. The weaker versions did a couple times when I got lazy.

The cryomancer and pyromancer classes need to be easier to unlock. I just farmed Vor Pride for an hour and got nothing. I just got frustrated, switched the effects of the 2 tomes with the effects of a scroll of identify and scroll of phase door and unlocked 'em with a new character

@edge

Let me know how that joke build works. I've been thinking about making a rogue that pumps STR and DEX, uses 2 swords/axes/maces and ignores stealth in favor of heavier armor. I have a feeling doing like 1500 damage with 1 flurry will be quite enjoyable.

Might I suggest a Shadow Blade then? I think the only tree difference between the two classes is stealth and if you're skipping it Shadow Blade will give you more options (like EoS if you go Temporal as a Mastery and/or Sense/Phase Door if you pick up Divination instead. EoS especially might work really well with a Shadow Blade if you can get enough mana to cast it.)
