The portals in the corners of the final battle are extremely counterintuitive. They're summoning spots, and you can shut them down, but you do so with the Orb of Many Ways, not the orb whose name matches the name of the spot. I don't know why. I hope it gets fixed.

I also tried equipping a powerful longbow but had no shoot option so I couldn't use it. Imho if you can't shoot it you shouldn't be able to equip it but that is irrelevant to the topic.

There's an option to learn to shoot bows and slings at one of the weapon shops in Last Hope.

I agree though, that it doesn't make sense to be able to equip bows or slings until you can actually shoot them.
