That was the easiest time I've had with the master yet. Scatter shot, critical shot, steady shot...dead! Phase door, repeat. The 33% increase in physical damage doesn't hurt either. Got ID from an escort quest and that has been heaven sent, got my cool bow from the mummy boss (increase damage AND + dex!!!!).

I think this is the luckiest character I've had so far in finding some of the scattered artifacts as well. I've played a bunch of characters on 12b and this is the first time I have the wand, cloak and armor that I do.

Update: Just finished the spider caves and am taking a break while I ponder what to do next. I have 20% cold resistance and zero fire (I have armor that will give 15% fire but I would have to give up stun immunity to do it). Stamina is starting to be a problem in longer fights and I am having big trouble when I get mobbed in twisty corridors. The slimes in the spider caves made me burn through several precious phase door scrolls (although entering the prides soon I plan on having them all burn up shortly anyway). I'll probably hit the unremarkable cave next.

I did talk to Zemekkys and he told me about the portal back to middle earth but Twinkle Toes started yelling about "dirty capitalist pigs" when he asked for money.

There isn't a money issue, it's just the nature of the challenge prohibits me from paying for anything or getting money in return for anything (at least that's how I read it...I did visit him to get the Vor Armoury opened up in case I'm feeling suicidal later and want to save myself the trouble of getting burned to death in some less spectacular fashion - he doesn't ID anything so I didn't feel too bad visiting him). I've never gotten to this point and not had the 200 gold necessary and I certainly have plenty of gold at the moment having not spent a single gold piece so far.

What I meant is that there should be a way to complete the quest without paying him anything, so you stay true to the challenge.

edit: Looking through the code, it seems that the alternative to the 200 gold didn't make it into the game. Never mind!

Quite correct, no financial transactions allowed!

Life has intervened somewhat so I am not completely familiar with the end game. If there is a point at which a financial transaction is needed to complete the game then you are allowed to do that!

Tried the easiest class (archmage), but I had not much luck with drops (there were only one or two vaults in Amon S?l). Got the phial relatively early, but the second world artifact (Ring of the War Master for an archmage) was only dropped by the Master, who also left a nice armour and staff. Oh, I found a plain mithril ring relatively early (I think in the Old Forest), but not a single resistance ring in the whole game.

I died in the spider cave because I forgot that there are spiders with rush and a freezing attack (my latest characters had always stun immunity or 90% stun resistance).

Update: Stuck in Rak'shor pride at the moment. Level 4 has a huge open area right at the stairs. Every time I've gone down there have been 2 or 3 eternal bone golems within sight and usually 1 has 50% physical + 50% all resists which means my archer can't really touch them. I can dodge them around the level but only if I know where they are and I've had a chance to clear some safety spots. Oh well, I'll keep trying. While I've been hopping back and forth from that level I've gotten a 34% fire resist armor and a nice cold resist ring (somewhere around 30%). Now if I can just get a fire resist ring or two I'd be really happy......

Bleh! Coming up from failing to protect the jeweler and got ambushed by some dragons. A major demon had cast darkness over the area so I couldn't see what was coming at me very well and I forgot that my cloak had two phase doors in it!
