Ten dead Cursed in a row (Nightmare) Update: winner

#1 Post by Delmuir »

This is why I hate the melee classes in this game. Ten Krog Cursed in a row didn't make it to level 10. Ten in a row. It's not like I don't know how to play the game...

It just sucks the fun out of the game when you can't even get going.

The nature of the problem is, as best I can tell, the equipment. I've noticed, over the years, that the equipment drops seem tailored to any class other than yours. This is common for this kind of game and I hate, hate, hate finding endless magical gear when I'm antimagic and so vice-versa (and I'm 99% sure it's not merely a cognitive bias). However, I have two additional criticisms:

1. Why would any melee class start basically naked? Why wouldn't they have boots and a helmet and a belt and gloves?

2. The damn incriptions... why, why, why are all of the infusions you find in the T1s and often T2s, worse than your starting ones? Everything else you have is at the bottom and yet, I can find twenty damn incriptions and every last one will be worse than my starting one. This makes me want to rage-quite more than dying. It's just a really, really bad design choice. Make the incriptions rarer or whatever but I shouldn't be using my starting ones half-way through the game, which I often am. For example, I've literally NEVER seen an regeneration infusion with a shorter cooldown than the starting one at 10. Even equal to it is rare and yet I can find endless ones that heal 90 over 5 turns with an 18 turn cooldown. WTF is that?

For the love of all that's good and decent, just start the incriptions at the level you start at. There's NO DAMN reason to have worse ones.

Not sure what's going on as you should be bumping into everything with ease in a pre-Insane difficulty.

Lack of investment in Reckless Charge or a Movement Infusion in your most recent character tells me you have no tool for running away when things go south. Cursed as a melee class has to be more attentive to hitting and running than ranged classes and even some other melee classes normally would be.

Also, as great as Predator is (in fact it's the class's best tree), you do not yet have the crit rate for it so I would focus on getting points in other stuff first.

Another one down... again, to a thoughtform bowman.

I don't understand your suggestions. I'm generally dying before I have the gold to buy inscriptions (often times) and even before level 8 for Reckless Charge. Not sure about that specific character but... movement infusions are no guarantee to be available and the same about forms of healing.

I'm getting wacked in T1s and I practically never die in T1s.

Part of this, no doubt, is that I just added the expansions and so I'm running into some unfamiliar things but by and large, it feels like a race/class issue. If I play a Thalore, for example, I have no problem making it out of the T1s but for some reason the Krog is just insanely fragile or rather, it feels (can't be sure) as if the enemy selection is somehow tougher.

I don't know...

Very odd. I'm almost tempted to suggest to you to run Cornac just so you can get Rampage immediately. It's not quite the same as a Movement Infusion but it's the closest thing without leaving you at the mercy of the RNG.

I'm pig-headed, ha ha, and so I just keep running something until I figure out how to make it work... or get lucky enough to get through the tough spots, which I just did. I now have a level 37 Krog Cursed who's tearing it up pretty well. I didn't pick up a movement infusion until I knocked off the Sandworm back-up guardian. That's probably a mistake but I just really needed the healing.

I will also note that the new Fungus category is really diminished. I'm not really sure it's worth the category point and generics.

I also picked up Feedback (which I made great use of on a Doomed) and it has served me well. It really helps but, again, it's not entirely clear if it's worth the cost. Perhaps those points would have been better spent in Fungus (and having it earlier).

Ultimately, I'm just not sure anti-magic is good for the Cursed and thus, the Krog is kind of a letdown. I'm testing out the Krog on an Oozemancer and maybe I'll try it with a Solipsist.

And here's how it ended up:

https://te4.org/characters/66225/tome/8 ... 7690cd07bd

One comically reckless death (I stood surrounded by elites and rares who summoned multiple copies of me who all hit me at once, and I didn't bother fleeing because I was lazy).

So, first thing that immediately comes to mind is that Cleave is trash.

Savage Hunter should be giving you all the time you need to pick off targets with ease, so what you actually should have been using was Repel for the chance to evade hits.

Cleave is not trash. It made it utterly unnecessary to try and avoid hits at all. All I have to do is attack the strongest enemy in a group and all of the lesser enemies just die as a side-effect. That's why I didn't have to bother shutting down the portals in the final fight.

I realize that for a more "precise" way of playing, you're probably right, but this worked just fine... though my style of play proved difficult to get going, clearly. My only death was entirely avoidable... I mean, I stood there for like five turns well after the danger point was obvious and I had options to flee but just didn't.

Something I forgot to say: congrats on the win. I actually didn't realize it was a victory until after making the comment on Cleave.

In my experience, it's fine for clearing out trash prior to Insane but even in Nightmare I think Repel gives you better results just because basic defenses can allow you to ignore trash mobs anyway. Repel adds a layer of protection that can handily do work against a tougher fare of foes. But to each his own.

Thanks... and like I said, you're probably right.

Perhaps I'll try an Insane Cursed and be more precise. Thanks again!
