This was crazy enough that I had to share it.
I'm sure most players have bemoaned going to Ungrol or Agrimley and needing to get them a multi-hued wyrm scale or ritch stinger, knowing that barring some good luck with a Dreadfell vault or the Ruined Dungeon you wouldn't be getting your bonus points until you go east. That's normal. A bit beyond that is when you get through the Old Forest and realize you didn't encounter a single hummerhorn or electric eel, which is annoying, but it happens.
When I saw I needed fire wyrm saliva for Agrimley, I wasn't particularly concerned. It wouldn't be a quick elixir unless I get the alternate Daikara (no such luck), but it's generally a safe bet you'll meet a fire wyrm somewhere in the mid-late portion of the pre-east portion of the game. They're not like electric eels and hummerhorns where you only tend to find them in a couple levels. You can find fire dragons more-or-less anywhere. Sometimes you'll stumble onto caves full of them. (I did not stumble onto any caves full of them).
I did, however, spend a bit of time hitting the wrong orbs in the ruined dungeon, because I'm playing a sawbutcher and (especially after losing two lives to Entropy spam in the temporal rift) I wanted to be able to deal with magic conditions sometime before Eruan. I didn't wind up getting any fire wyrms, but whatever.
Hit all the dungeons, go through Dreadfell, delve into Reknor, make it east, all without any fire wyrms. That's a bit surprising and kinda annoying, but well within the evilness threshold of ToME's RNG.
No fire wyrms through There and Back Again or Ardhungol. Not a huge surprise all things considered, but now I'm getting impatient.
I skip the flooded cave and shadow crypt for the time being and rush Gorbat. Plenty of dragons in Gorbat, I figure I'll just take out the first fire wyrm I see, get my elixir, and get back to my regularly scheduled dungeon crawls.
The Gorbat pride does not have a single fire wyrm. I take out my annoyance on their supreme wyrmic and head for Eruan.
The last set of monsters I fight in Eruan is a gaggle of fire drake hatchlings. I believe they were taunting me. But that's okay. Because Eruan leads to the Charred Scar, a straight run filled with nothing but faeros and fire dragons. So, finally, I get my haha just kidding there is not one solitary fire wyrm in the entire Charred Scar! Hatchlings, plenty. Drakes, sure. But not one wyrm in a level where fire dragons make up something like 80-90% of the enemies. I didn't even know it was possible to go through the Charred Scar without encountering fire wyrms! I'm honestly wondering at this point if some glitch or addon or something removed fire wyrms from my enemy list somehow.
EDIT: Finally found some fire wyrms in one of those lava vaults. In the Vor pride of all places. Pretty sure they're guaranteed there, the existence of free-range fire wyrms remains a matter for debate, but whatever, I'll take it.

Re: Worst alchemist luck I've ever had
Only relevant alchemist reward is potion of invulnerability imo. The other ones are good, but nothing worth stressing over.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.
