YAVP: Normal/Adventurer (Really Roguelike) Paradox Mage

#1 Post by azrael »

I've won a number of times before, and also managed to kill Atamathon with a few characters, but this was the first time I was able to kill Linaniil. This game was much easier than my Wyrmic run, probably because the whole point of this run was to find out how badly I could break the game with a class literally designed to break reality.

Temporal Fugue+ (3x) Bathe In Light was giving me a 6500-7000 point damage shield by the end of the game. Anyone who says that Archmages are the only ones who can shield worth a damn hasn't tried a paradox mage. In the training room I regularly hit 9000-10000 average damage per turn, although I couldn't keep it up for more than 10 turns or so. Both final bosses died in 4 or 5 turns. Atamathon lasted a similar amount of time. Linaniil was the only boss in the game who gave me any challenge whatsoever, and the only one who ever tripped Cauterize. Her ridiculously high saves meant that I had to tune my Paradox up to 500 or so just to land Entropy and Cease to Exist on her, which gave me some serious Paradox management problems.

In the end, unfortunately for her, 70,000+ damage every 10 turns or so eventually turned out to be too much. She kept me teleporting all over Angolwen before finally falling to Fugue clones while I ducked behind buildings.

Ultimately, Paradox Mages are still by far the most fun class in the game. They've got some very difficult to find but also very exploitable talent combinations, but that's okay-- my favorite part was just experiment in the Training Room to find new spell interactions. Maybe I've give Nightmare or Insane a shot sometime.

Paradox Mage on normal is dead easy. Same for nightmare. Tougher on insane. Can almost be done on madness.
