Saved an Escort with 0hp

#1 Post by ToME4Tim »

Spawned in a room with a couple of vampires and 3 or so smaller undead. Thought she was a goner, but it looks like she's going to make it out alive.

Have to say this is my most satisfying achievement so far.

She looks tired and wounded
Well that's an understatement.

Monsters can be reduced to 0 without dying, and they need 1 HP more damage to die. I'm not sure if it's the same for the player.

It sure is! I've been at exactly 0 hp before and not died, and I didn't have any "die at -X life" gear on.

Yes. It is a bit unusual, as almost all games that use a health or hitpoint system for death require 1HP to stay alive, rather than 0. I guess it is one of the eccentricities of the ToME engine (although with the ToME2 port Zizzo is doing at the moment it is hard to get exactly zero since damage is always done in integers, whereas health slowly comes back in fractions - so unless you have exactly 2.0 health when you get 2 damage, you would get higher or lower than zero and be alive or dead, without revealing that 0 exactly might not mean dead).

The thing is, damage is dealt in fractions (I believe it's also displayed in combat log this way), but HP and other values are displayed rounded to nearest integer. So it's very possible that the escort had something like 0.25 HP - still alive, but the rounding displayed HP as 0.

The old saying goes, "the only hit point that matters is the last."

Clearly, that's wrong. The only hit point that matters is the last fraction.
