Yes. It is a bit unusual, as almost all games that use a health or hitpoint system for death require 1HP to stay alive, rather than 0. I guess it is one of the eccentricities of the ToME engine (although with the ToME2 port Zizzo is doing at the moment it is hard to get exactly zero since damage is always done in integers, whereas health slowly comes back in fractions - so unless you have exactly 2.0 health when you get 2 damage, you would get higher or lower than zero and be alive or dead, without revealing that 0 exactly might not mean dead).
The thing is, damage is dealt in fractions (I believe it's also displayed in combat log this way), but HP and other values are displayed rounded to nearest integer. So it's very possible that the escort had something like 0.25 HP - still alive, but the rounding displayed HP as 0.
