Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
Hi everyone! I have a YouTube channel where I do gaming videos, focusing mainly on fun indie games. I just finished up a Dungeons of Dredmor series, and then heard about this game. It looked so interesting, I decided to do a series on ToME as well.
So far, I have my first impression video up, but I have more coming. I plan on posting a new ToME video every other day.
I hope some of you guys get some enjoyment out of watching me figure this game out!
Episode 01: First Impression
Episode 02: Town
Episode 03: Ruins of Kor'Pul
Episode 04: The Shade
Episode 05: Old Forest
Episode 06: I'm Getting Stronger
Episode 07: First Death

Looks interesting, will be watching!
P.S. the button for resting is "r"

Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
When you hit Z to autoexplore, it automatically rests until you're all healed up before it starts moving you around.
I believe R also rests, but you can right-click your character to access the Rest command, too.
Also, those grey items? They're not trash. They're Unique items. Use that Orb of Scrying, and Elisa will tell you what they are.
Category points, in addition to buying infusions slots, can also let you learn those greyed-out talent trees on the leveling-up screen. Just click on the name of the talent tree, and that will let you start learning those talents just like your other ones.

Thanks. I figured out that z rests before exploring, but I didn't know about r. That should help me out.

Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
Man, that was fascinating!
I"m an experienced player and you had me in tears of laughter sometimes. The best bit was when you hit the bear and bees appeared, and you thought they had come out its backside! (No, they just happened to be there.) but also when you tried to wear the gem and couldn't work out how to wear it (you can't for most classes). And when you lost "the escort chick" I was laughing hard! (yes, they are DUMB unbelievably so!!) "if she won't follow me, that's her problem!" - i had tears i my eyes. I had never realised how non-sensical it is to a newcomer !!!!!!
But the best was seeing you pickup the artifacts, and because their name is greyed and not identified, you assumed they were junk. You said, "all kinds of junk here!" - and you had showstring orbs and halfling foot, two early game artifacts!
And I loved the bit about the phase door rune - "how many times can I use this thing?"
It also shows that we need more ingame help - you had no idea about stamina regen, and even wondered if you might die if it got to zero (you don't, just your life, and even that can be affected by heroism infusions and some class talents, allowing it to go below zero before death).
I also don't you noticed the icons on the right below the map, which indicate positive and negative status effects.
And you had no idea what the talent category point does, or that you can use it to turn on a greyed out category. The big thing which it showed me was that you didn't realise how VALUABLE those talent points are. You only get a few in the game (3-5 depending on class and one quest).
so keep up the videos they are priceless!

MADNESS rocks
Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
@jenx Thanks, man! I really do enjoy going into a game blind and trying to figure it all out.
I'm sure I'll make a bunch more stupid mistakes before I figure a lot of stuff out.
On the topic of the leveling up points, one of my favorite things any any rpg is character customization, and ToME seems to have a pretty good setup for that.

haha sounds like fun
good luck with tome, too! I was very green and super-newbie too not so long ago.
Been getting some unlocks open, and learning from my stupid mistakes...
often the game can give those "OH, right, that's how it goes" - feelings, and it's great.

Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
I'm having fun watching these as well. Some notes (little spoilery, but I've kept them to stuff that in a perfect world would be better documented or more prominent on the interface):
- Gold: it's also shown your in the top left corner, just to the right of the little picture and above a fat sack of gold
- Rest more! No reason not to, and being in top shape with all talents usable can make a vital difference.
- Weapon evalution: I think the greatsword of slime was your best weapon - anything hit by slime is slowed a bit, with no resistance possible.
- Manaburning: this one is a bit weird: manaburning only does damage against creatures that use magic - skeleton mages or the Shade, from what you've come across so far.
- still, your blazebringer axe ain't bad either
- your Daunting Presence sustained skill needs to be activated - it's the fat red man icon. It'll reduce your max stamina for a bit while it's active, so you might not necessarily want to use it at the same time as some other sustain.
- wild infusions: the really important thing about those is whether they are physical, magical or mental, the next important thing is the cooldown (lower is what you want), and only after that the damage reduction. The type (physical, magical, mental) determines what type of negative effect you can clear. Being stunned or frozen are physical effects, while for example, confusion is a mental one (it doesn't matter if magic causes them). Magical effects are pretty rare.

Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
@jotwebe Thanks for all the tips! That should help me out a lot.

Re: Zzandrio Plays Tales of Maj'Eyal
You're very welcome!
You've been doing quite well so far.
You've been doing quite well so far.
- how many charges? almost everything has unlimited charges, cooldowns serve to balance stuff. So you can fire that wand as often as you want.
- wearing things: it takes a turn to switch stuff, so be careful doing it in combat
- digging: I don't think anything in town is diggable. Try again once you're back in the forest...
- white stuff: is indeed trash, although the stats can be decent. I'd also only keep the green ones you might want to use (those are the next cheapest).
- blues, purples, pinks and yellows: those are more valuable and often better (but not always, and it depends on your class a lot). Pinks and oranges are randomized artifacts, golden-yellows are static artifacts and usually the best stuff (but not for every class)
- your category point: those are quite valuable, you're only guaranteed to get 3 of those over your entire career (plus the one you got for being a Cornac style human). Using them for extra infusion slots is usually a solid choice; you can also unlock a talent tree. If you want to do that, a safe choice would be Bloodthirst.
