[1.0] Roguelike WINNER - Halfling Archer (slinger) !!!

#1 Post by jenx »

Finally....

http://te4.org/characters/2460/tome/dda ... de95e6b296

This is the second roguelike winner for an archer since b42, which was what motivated me. So I'm very happy with winning with no deaths. Octavia beat me to it by several hours :-(

Then I tried Atamatathon and used up blood of life and ring of the dead. I got him down to 3600 before dying, which I think should be an achievement ;-). I'm not sure how any one could stop him.

This character was awesome. The gear on the character sheet is quite different from what I won with, as I switched stuff to increase resistance penetration on atamathon, to no avail!

Stone Alchemy is a great way to raise more money, to buy more gear, and to get the Craft Hands prodigy. I think next time, I'll get the Garkul's revenge to tackle atamathon specifically (though I never got his necklace this game).

I imbued a merchant belt with Goedelath Rock, which made for the most awesome belt.

Interestingly, I only used two game artifacts for final fight. Rest was one rare, one purple ring, one blue cloak (for+19% crit multiplier), and randarts. And the randart sling with +4 slime made a huge difference.

I didn't get Vital Shot, as I died using this previously.

Rapid Shot is definitely better than aim once you have the set up right. I might write this up in a character guide later.

Thanks for the great game.

(I've now won with Cursed, Temporal Warden, Brawler, and Archer.)

Congratulations on that win and thanks for the inspiration :)
I think I'll roll another slinger, probably as a Shalore again - though I will stick to adventure mode... I'm way, way to impatient for roguelike.

1 day too late I'm afraid :P

It's almost comical for how much Ata overkilled you, especially since you had really nice resists. Perhaps Lucky Day would be nice for him, pretty much negating melee hits, although I don't know how other deaths happened, was it normal melee or his Irre Sun/Beam lasers?

How much total gold do you think you earned together with Stone Alchemy? I've yet to try it on any char, never really had so much generics to spare, but if it gives extra randarts in the end...

Also, why slings over bows, didn't lack of aoe attacks beside Scatter shot hurt?

I know about being late, so I edited my original.

I died through normal hits from him. He has 380% increase to all damage, so whatever he does hits hard. I had huge resist penetration, and thought I could kill him from a distance, but he closes the distance every time straight away. So I'm not sure how/if an archer could get him.

With stone alchemy I earned about 5 artifacts, $16,000. I normally earn about 2, sometimes 3. So it added about $10,000 in total perhaps. And I got it late too.

the big advantage of slings is twofold: attack speed, combined with Rapid Shot, gives you lots of shots per turn. I'd like to try this with the speed prodigy to see how it went. The second is the offhand. So I had either big increases in damage, crit chance, penetration, or powerful shields.

I myself didn't realise about shields this phenomenon: if someone attacks you across the room, from a distance, say an archer, and you block with your shield, THEY are vulnerable to counterstrike. So your 2000 hp dmg shot becomes 4000 dmg. Nice!

The damage output is the same. You lose accuracy, but my final accuracy was 99 (scaled !), so no problem there, APR, but mine was about 70 iirc, so that's fine, and physical power, about 60-70 at game end. This reduces dmg a lot early on (but by a lesser amount of course, as dex is lower), but this is less significant with scaled values. so 60 converts to 12 points in highest tier.

I'm not sure if shots have the same ego options either, but I certainly love the shot ones. I've posted on this in the metaclass post on archers.

btw, lack of aoe attacks makes no difference, due to rapid shot.

Both slings and bows have same attacks speed of 80%, with some ego/artifacts lowering it even more (my sweet Lightning Bow had 70%). I could see the offhand being quite a big pro though, perhaps there is some nice dagger/minstar out there with +damage on hit as well, can't recall any from memory.

Speed Prodigy... the one that require 20 equilibrium using talents? Could be very nice, although you would have go and invest heavily into Anti-magic. Getting good weapon would be pain though, archers are already forced into one weapon + one ammo, loosing arcane powered chunk of already limited selection would seriously hurt early-mid game (enough to say my skelly archer had to use so weak t2 arrows, that when t3 white dropped in Dreadfell, it was huge upgrade for him... yeah).

You could combine it with Yeek for near ultimate machine gun, if you got guts cutting yourself out of another ~200hp at max level :P.

from a rough glance it looks like atamathon's reflection shield killed you, did you dispel or manaburn him?

Manaburn - usually from the antimagic talent Mana Clash, or the AM gauntlets that eat arcane artifacts - drains mana from the target and deals damage. Mana-using sustains, like the golem reflect damage skill, turn off when mana hits 0.

There's a few ways to directly turn off sustains, but the activatable on Gloves of Dispersion is probably the easiest for a wide variety of classes to obtain.
<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.
