Can anyone post a guide explaining how to unlock them?

Darkgod talks about it in the development thread.

Guaranteed for Shalore, go to halfling ruins. I haven't done it myself but don't have more information.

Heard there's a lot of traps so bring a trap disarm wand was the advice I was given.

Any more info on this? I cleared the halfling ruins with a Shalore but found nothing to help me unlock the race.

That is literally everything you need to know. If you didn't find any new lore in the Halfling Ruins even with a Shalore, that's probably a bug and needs reporting.

Is it possible the boss generated somewhere unreachable? I don't remember whether the ruins ever generated isolated sections that need digging.

I had to dig into an otherwise inaccessible chamber to get to that boss when I unlocked it. Actually thought that was deliberate, but he was out in the open the next time.

Yeah, I'm guessing he just was in a hidden, inaccessible corner and I just couldn't find him. I got him on my second run.
