Impending Doom -spoilery answers welcome
How good is ID really against things that matter? I'm assuming that bosses/tough mobs have a really good chance to save against it? Worth investing still as a necromancer?

Unless there was a recent nerf, impending doom is a very useful great talent.
Not sure, but I think stun immune npc cannot doomed, but that leaves a large number of monsters, including most bosses until level 40 or 45...

I don't know if the Impending Doom spell works the same way as the "10% of chance of doing Impending Doom on spell hit" from the Staff of Destruction.
But after a few time i had to get rid of that staff as i noticed the Impending Doom was sometime jumping on me, it looks like some random enemies can be generated with some item/spell/shield able to reflect it back to you.
And that's really nasty when it happens as you are far from having the same amount of health as the enemies usually and Impending Doom is much more dangerous on you than on some very high health monsters, so be carefull in case the spell itself can be that easily going back at you.

Iirc you can doom a mob and then teleport away to safety to knock off a massive chunk of health. I've not played necromancer much so can't confirm though.

I am surprised. I do no remember having any problem with impending doom. And I had a rapid glance at the code, and I do not what nasty event could happen to the caster.
Re: Impending Doom -spoilery answers welcome
After surviving my Staff of Destruction shooting impending doom on enemy that my spell hit, just to see that Impending Doom getting back to my not very high health (due to being mage) character face, i started to think differently of that spell.
Maybe it was bad luck, but i was surprised on how many time i got that situation happening, as if more enemy than i thought were generated with either a displacement shield or some reflection one/rune

Displacement shield won't reflect status effects. Nothing can reflect status effects, as far as I know. You probably just kept catching yourself in your own AoE. What build were you using? Because if you were using, say, the Wildfire/Cleansing Flames combo or the Shivgoroth/Glacial Vapour combo on a regular basis, you'd be proccing it on yourself all the time.

It was this Thalore Archmage that i had decided to build as a Tempest (though still having Manathrust as a backup).
If impending doom can't be reflected/displaced, i'm not sure how i could get hit by my own area of effect, aren't the storm/air spell not supposed to hurt yourself (unlike fire by example) ?

It was probably the Thunderstorm. The lightning strikes in a radius-1 ball, so if you're adjacent to an enemy that gets hit with your Thunderstorm, you'll get hit as well.

That i didn't knew, thanks.
Very annoying though but it confirms that staff of destruction is to avoid at all cost then if you have spells that can hit you, even if the damage is negligble, the Impending Doom is a death sentence on mages due to the lower health than usual.
At least i'll know for the next time i'm trying an archmage.

I am -relatively- certain that Displacement shield, Empathic Hex (or maybe rune of reflection on the Troll hedgemage) can still reflect the damage, however. I've had that happen to a couple characters who, say, used disease and curse of death on an enemy.Mewtarthio wrote:Displacement shield won't reflect status effects. I think Dsiplacement Shield can reflect damage dealt by status effects, thoughMewtarthio wrote:Displacement shield won't reflect status effects. Nothing can reflect status effects, as far as I know. Oh, yes, they can reflect the damage you deal, but they're usually limited in how much they can reflect. The only exceptions are Displace Damage and negative statuses like Empathic Hex or Martyrdom. And, bear in mind, those will make any damage backfire on you; Impending Doom isn't especially susceptible, and it's a lot safer than burst damage.

My necromancer is rolling strong, next up Reknor. I even managed to Doom the Master (although didn't work every time) so ID seems powerful enough
