Noob Question on closing High Peak Portals

Err....yeah. So I've beaten the game on normal tonnes of times, and have started on Nightmare.

The only problem is, I've never bothered to close the portals in normal mode, and now....don't actually know how. *blush*

I tried < and > (like for the naga invasions), but nothing.

So, two questions:
1. How do I close them?
2. Can you close them after they have begun spawning or is there a time limit? (I've read people *racing* to get there with movement and controlled teleport)

You must use the orbs.
Every portal has an orb associated with it and spawns corresponding monsters (undeads, dragons, etc). Just 'u'se the corresponding orb when standing on the portal.

No time limit. The people in a hurry just want to make the most of Aeryn's distraction and minimize the likelihood of something really nasty popping out before they get there.

I hate to necro this thread, but I just finished my first winning run about a week ago and I never could get any of the portals to close. I tried all four orbs on a couple of the portals and they always stayed active. Do you just have one chance to use the correct orb? Needless to say, the final battle was rather intense with all four portals active the entire time.
