What to work on/what to start with
Ok, so I just started today, and my first run on Adventurer difficulty is likely ending soon - out of extra lives, so I'll probably wander somewhere foolish and die horribly. However, I've unlocked quite a bit (level 19 at the moment, doing the last of the four dungeons in the third? quest step), mostly through bumbling around - Archmage, Summoner, Wyrmic, Cursed, Brawler, and the Yeek. I've been playing a Thalore Berserker, which has been fun but seems like it'll run into problems against heavy CC or magic - every encounter with a mage has me biting my nails, especially if my charge is on cooldown. I'm curious what a well-rounded beginner class is, including locked class/race combos, that I should work towards or try next. Something with late-game viability, preferably, even if it is a bit more complex than 'hit it with the sharp thing'. Also, what's the lowdown on difficulty settings? For someone with some (but not a ton) of roguelike experience who doesn't mind a challenge (i.e. Going Rogue Permadeath in Dungeons of Dredmor, Classic Ironman in the new X-Com, for recent examples) what's a good starting point?

Adventure Mode on Regular difficulty is probably right for you. Roguelike mode is considered quite a bit riskier as with just one life you can't make any mistakes.
Berserkers can get very strong if you invest in the Bloodthirst tree. To help deal with mages you might want to look at getting into anti-magic (check out the weirdos in Zigur).
For a new class I'd suggest an Alchemist, as they have a radically different playstyle and are strong throughout the game. Archmages are also good, but a little too easy in some ways, plus the number of options can be overwhelming.

Well, I eventually bit it by trying to move too fast and getting hit 4-5 times in a row on level 5 of Deadfall, a named vampire was right around a corner and ate me. I managed to unlock Temporal Warden and the archmage Storm tree as well as what I'd mentioned before, though, so I'd call it a very successful first run.
I think Archmage sounds like fun... I prefer to play the strongest class I can find then experiment with builds to see if I can up myself, and if it's too easy just raise the difficulty. I think it's the min/maxer in me. Maybe for now I'll work on unlocking the rest of the Archmage spell trees, or ghoul/skeleton.
