11 infravision and 0 light radius - still spotted instantly?

#1 Post by bricks »

I can't tell if this is a bug, a means of balancing the game, or just a hangover from earlier development, but it seems like there is no advantage to infravision unless you have access to stealth. Which is currently... one and a half classes? Is this intended? Granted, it is a little easier to get 11 infravision (currently using Unflinching Eye and Duathelden Heart) than it is to get 11 light radius. I just feel like I can't ever disengage from an enemy without teleporting. Is there another use for infravision, or any reason to avoid having a huge light radius?

Edit: I just noticed that I can just barely avoid being spotted by enemies on the very edge of my vision. Not too useful, since many dungeons don't have many unobstructed 10-tile length unlit areas.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Can you spot enemies before they spot you with that much infravision?

Only on the very edge of my vision, and even then I suspect that the angle makes a huge difference. For once the Higher talent is appealing. :)

If you have 20 infravision (which I've done before, and is incredibly awesome!), then you can see actors 20 tiles away.

I'm gonna have to recheck how AI/NPCs use "canSee" and lite sources. If the player has 0 lite and the player is on an unlit tile beyond the NPC's lite radius and infravision radius, then the player probably shouldn't be seen.

IIRC, all NPCs have 10 infravision, I don't think that they need/use light at all.

Huh. That's rather disappointing.

Just for the record: summoner + high infravision = borderline exploit.

I think this post makes a very good point, not all monsters should be able to see in darkness (or have limited range).

I have noted that stealth is incredibly hard to maintain when maxed out and just about impossible with only minimal investment. I think it could probably use a buff, at least in the values that players use, as it stands the things you can reliably hide form are the ones you can walk up to and crush without really noticing and the things you *WANT* to hide form can spot you seven leagues over without having to turn their heads to look at you.
