Well, I got so frustrated with my last mage that I started up a summoner just for a change. They are powerful, with a few tricks.
1. A ghoul summoner can use his ghoul-talents to increase strength and constitution, making armor and health talents within easier reach. Not to mention that stun resist.
2. Never go around corners, ever! Instead summon a fire imp at the corner, if he starts shooting off fire bolts you know there is something around that corner. And if you see something kills him with lightning for example, you can get a guess of what the monster around the corner is.
3. Don't try to get all summoning creatures talents, concentrate on a few and power them all the way.
4. There is no need to maintain LOS with any enemy, just get behind a barrier (occasionally the summon itself) and follow rule 2 (see above).
5. This is not a rule or a trick, this is a possible option an experimenter may like. There is the option to make this a fighting summoner, since he does have access to weapon combat. That would mean using skill points perhaps better used somewhere else. But with a good weapon, it could perhaps break even.
Any other rules/tricks that anyone else uses?
