I personally find it rather troublesome that I have to grind my way up to a tedious quest just to play a proper mage. One of the things about ToME I've always loved was the variety of classes and races, and it feels rather irritating having the one class I want to play dangle out of my reach like a fishing lure.

Another issue is the fact that I simply am not the best of players. In T2 I scarcely managed past level 20, and that was usually when I got lucky with thaumaturgy and got a massive damage view spell. I never even touched the maze quest, let alone traveled across the sea or visited Galadriel or whatnot. I've played for years, but I'm just not someone who can survive for very long.

Thus far in T4, I haven't made it past level 5. The prospect of completing a quest to find 15 staves is something I simply have to consider nearly impossible, as I doubt I will survive long enough to find any other than the one I start with.

I can understand having fancy, special classes as unlocks, but not having a normal mage class to begin with is rather frustrating. Zapping with a staff and chucking crystal bombs just doesn't feel right, I need a proper magic user.

Just my thoughts...

There is another, less grinding way to complete the mage unlock... beat Amon Sul and visit the apprentice mage again. :)

DG, maybe the apprentice should hint at this unlock?
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

And that is also my opinion. That's why I cheated a bit and have all races/classes available ;-)

Not sure if there's a second requisite to doing it this way. I tried doing it this way on more than one character before unlocking it the hard way, and it never worked. I -think- you need to have done the quest before, to be able to do it the short, quick way but not sure.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?
