I'd hate to do this but...the master??

I am having an unbelieveable time getting past the master. Up till now I managed to get through everyplace without any real spoilers but I can NOT figure out how to beat him. I killed him 3 times just to have him "return from the grave" each time until I used up my last life.
Am I missing something?

As far as I know you have to beat him twice in succession without losing a life. In hardcode mode that just means beating him twice.

that would make sense, never managed to get him 2 times in a row before death.
