Dungeon levelling

#1 Post by Sirrocco »

So, the way the various dungeons work, there's a point for any dungeon (except perhaps the last one or two) where you're high enough level that it's just not a threat anymore. Similarly, if you're too low level, anything except trollshaws and possibly Amon Sul is liable to eat you alive. That's pretty much a given. However, I've heard of people going into Carn Dum relatively early, and it's *always* a pretty serious threat for me whenever I go. I recently noted on another thread someone talking about how they'd dip into it at first, but then stay away if they didn't get in early enough, and it got me to thinking. Are there any levels where people avoid specific dungeons - where the dungeon gets dangerous faster than the character gets powerful so that if you hit a certain level while inside you'd really better leave?

Thank you for your time.

Aside from the obvious ones like not going to Tol Falas with a low level character, the only thing I really try to avoid is going to Amon Sul with a character with low hitpoints since the skeleton warriors can insta-kill you with their stuns. I use the trollshaws to get the character to L6 or 7, which is most cases is enough to survive whichever dungeon I choose next.

I stay in the Trollshaws until I'm level 3 to 5, then head over to the Old Forest, and either finish that, or decide to skip over to Amon Sul (~ level 10) if I need the boss reward from that dungeon for actual use. Otherwise, I'll typically finish off Old Man Willow at level 12-13, then do Amon Sul, then usually the Maze.

Carn Dum can be OK for ranged damage characters (Archmage, Archer, Slinger, Anorithil) if you're very cautious, or if you just like high-risk, high-reward play. You're not likely to meet the ranged damage enemies on the first level, but then again, you could.
