Yeah pickpockets rock you!
But having a safe zone would simply mean that you just got a near infinite house.
And anyway pickpocket or ot there will ALWAYS be somebody to take your stuff when you are away ;)
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD

[tome] phantomfrettchen: your ability not to tease anyone is simply stunning ;)

Sure, but why not? There's no reason to hoard loot anyway, it's nearly always a better idea to convert stuff you don't need anymore into gold. The only thing I've ever felt a need to collect in ToME were Artifacts (not because I needed them but because they were unique), and apparently those don't disappear right now anyway.

In general, I just think that it's be nice if stuff stuck around a bit longer in areas without monsters. It gives you the feeling that the rest of the gameworld exists even if you're not looking at it, you know? Dungeons are supposed to be those dangerous, evil places where you should never feel too safe, having towns be different would make a nice contrast.

I loved having a house full of named slime molds, and collected artefacts.

Especially the way the game is currently, selling artefacts is pointless, do I *really* want that 0.90 gold for Bill's Club?

Well think about it. Don't you take everything that's not nailed down? I know I do.

True enough, but on the other hand I also slice up dragons hard enough to turn 'em into roast beef. I certainly wouldn't steal from my characters if I were some level 1 townie.

Nah, it's not the townies stripping your junk; townfolk don't exist, currently. I'd guess it's migrant thief 'p's. I envision it like a herd of bison or somethin', rolling over the town like a tide, stripping everything to the dirt, their numbers stretching across multiple screens. Obviously, they're not scared of you, even if you do use dragon teeth for toothpicks, 'cause there's like sixity bazillion of them and more coming in from off screen. You might kill one... twenty, two hundred, but there's always more, and by the gods, they will have your half gold icy iron sword!

It would be kinda' amusing to find your stolen items in a hidden shop somewhere on the map, probably along with all the junk items you leave lying on the dungeon floor. Those things have to be going somewhere or another, after all.

Actually, just for showman-sake I would like something like the Mortem House so that you can show off your cool finds in character dumps, but can't actually retrieve. For instance, in Beta 3 right now, I've the hard choice of using a Slime Covered Steel War Axe (48 nature damage) or the R. Being the Dwarven Fighter that I am, I am actually quiet torn...
