Hey folks.
Just recently started playing and after some tries on easy, im now with a fairly succesfull normal char.
A cornac Bulwark, if you care.
Thing is, i have a couple of misc. questions that the Wiki, or the net could not answer me.
Maybe you can?
1. Where can i get a pickaxe?
A dwarf can buy one after the starting area, but where do the other races find one?
2.My fortess
Ive cleared the fortress under the lake(tough boss!) and now im wondering.
Whats up with the locked door?
And, can i just dump stuff on the ground and will it be there forever?
The spirit said something about a storeroom.
3.Transmorg chest
Will converting items yield the same gold as selling?
And is there a umbrella reward for powering up the fortress?
4.Assasin lord
Will this quest pop up again?
I had to run around a bit and triggered it, but i was way to weak to beat the lord so i declined for the moment.
Thats it for now, any info is greatly aprreciated!
regards

Hey, always good to see a new player :) And it looks like you're doing pretty well so far...
1. I don't think there's any guaranteed pickaxe in the game, though I think there was mention of it being made into a reward for completing the mad lumberjack quest (you'll see it soon enough if you haven't yet).
2. Well done, it is indeed a tough boss! The locked door is unlocked by gaining fortress energy, but you should seriously beware what lies beyond. You can store stuff permanently in the room to the south.
3. For most items you get a little less from using the Tranmog chest than selling (I think gems are the exception). However the lost gold is totally worth it for the convenience. Gold loses its value later in the game. Fortress power doesn't affect a lot - later on it lets you raid random dungeons that more likely to kill you than benefit you.
4. It's a one-off pop-up, so I guess you've failed. It's sometimes not worth the risk of taking him on though.

Re: Help a newbie out ;D
Thx for the info man!
1. Didnt get one as a reward for the Lumberjack. The unlock is pretty sweet though.
I found 3 picks on the first level of the maze
Could be that they have a higher chance of showing there.
Honestly i just wanted to get the gems in the old forest.
Usually there are some behind a walled of section.
2. Good to know! Looking forward to what lies beyond the door.
Yeah the boss was pretty tough and took the first life of that char, damn aura effects ruffed me up pretty hard.
But beating him was a very rewarding feeling.
(eventhough that char got oblitared on the mountain peak by that ice wizzard later
)
3. Again, good to know! I had a hunch and held of on morphin good items and rather sold em.
In the beginning i find gold to be pretty important, so you can grab some good infusions.
Helps out a whole lot to actually heal competently.
4. Whelp! No matter, as im on a new run already i can now time my exploration a bit better.
I did take him down on a easy run before, so i know what im getting myself in.

Re: Help a newbie out ;D
I'm pretty sure that just about everything transmogrifies for the same amount of gold as it sells for. The exceptions are that shops have maximum and minimum amounts they will pay for items while the transmogrification chest does not. So if you have a very expensive item, it is better to transmogrify it; if you have a big stack of very cheap items it is better to sell them (because you will be paid 0.1 gold per item, while transmogrification will give you [actual value]*[stack size] gold, rounded to the nearest 0.1). I think the latter situation has been pretty much eliminated with the recent change to ammo, though.
<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.

Thx for the info!
I noticed that shops sometimes displayed only ten gold on a sale that was worth more in the window.
Though it may be a glitch.
Now, on to new things.
Tac-chat!
How do you deal with magic heavy enemies?
Lets cover our bases first.
I play with a cornac bulwark, because i like tanky chars and the generic fighter is always the first class i run through games like these.
Now, ive done a few runs so far but never managed to get up to lvl20. Either due to my inexpierence with the game or due to magic/effect heavy enemies.
Its kind of obvious that this is the weaknes of the bulwark.
A walking mount of armor with a shield and a big axe could care less about other melee guys, but has to be on his toes when it comes to magic/effects.
Up to this point ive reliably died to ranged magic beams or to some effect that screwed me over real hard.(being frozen in the middle of a group? nice..)
How do you deal with that?
I mean you cant have resistances against every element(or if your lucky you can, but probably lower values than single res)
and your saves and res. against effects is heavily dictated by what gear you can find. Lugging around spare equipment for certain situations is a way but again, dictated by the game.
Also infusions need some thinking.
The way i build my guy i only get a fourth slot at LV20, because i spend the first two category points to open up two skill trees(Warcries and battle tactics).
I need two healing infusions(regen, and insta) and usually i fill the third with a wild infusion to reduce damage and get off some effects. Depends on what the game gives me, but i try to grab a mental one ASAP.
But with the expierence i have now, i am really thinking about switching the wild infusion for a teleport one.
In hindsight having one, would have saved me a couple of times.
So, what do you guys think?

Re: Help a newbie out ;D
Escape options help immensely. Movement infusion is pretty good in my opinion, and invisibility can be very effective at getting out of a tight spot.
Against spellcasters make sure you have Rush maxed. It has a high range and low cooldown, and dazes the enemy it hits. Whilst that enemy is dazed you can take out his nearby friends.
Anti-magic can be good as well, if you decide to pick it up, though it comes with drawbacks too.

Hmm..yeah Rush was a skill i considered.
Would for sure cut down the time the caster has to blast me from afar, ill try it on the next run.
What does a movement infusion actually do?
I didnt really get the concept of speed, in a turn based envoirenment so far.

Re: Help a newbie out ;D
Movement infusion lets you move way faster for a number of turns - so you can skip about 12 paces whilst the enemy moves twice. I tend to treat it like a controlled phase door, using it to get myself into a strategically better position (ie. run away).
Re: Help a newbie out ;D
Ah now i understand what this does.
Though i have to say a teleport rune seems more usefull to me this far.
It saved my life at least twice on the current run, though ive also discovered that it can be rendered useless.
At least in my fortress i could not teleport.
And that unique Luminous horror in the farportal room really made me want to.
Also the Rush talent has really payed of for me, so thanks for that tip.
It is tremendously usefull, not only against mages, dazed is a really good effect.
