Question about Daikara and dungeon level ranges

#1 Post by peacedog »

I lost my most promising character to date - a Bulwark - in what I believe is the final area of Daikara. Playing Adventure difficulty, I lost at least 3 lives here over the course of the game. Just after entering the map I was swarmed. Lots of nasty monsters and my confusion resistance wasn't what it ought to have been (so I left and came back later). Losing a character is part of the game, but one thing struck me as odd. Amongst the monsters was a level 45 shadow. Actually, there were a bunch of them (or something was summoning them, but never mind). I killed 2 or 3 but eventually succumbed.

Maybe the monster level doesn't matter, but is that unusual? I triple-checked and saw "level 45". They were really difficult to deal with; I frequently missed them, they healed up, and took a lot of turns to bring down (all the while other creatures are pelting me from afar, or slipping in behind me). Is that an unusual occurrence?

It was probably a vault monster summoning Shadows using the associated Doomed talent. It's a really common issue, and it seems like a number of fixes have been proposed but not implemented. Unfortunately there is pretty much no way to counter this, apart from killing the monster in the vault.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Ahh, I hadn't considered that. Them's the breaks.

I had a L42 Radiant Horror in Daikara on this game. I was L20 at the time. I had to check the log just to find out what killed me before I even saw it. I saw it on the next life and managed to teleport out closer to the exit.

The shadows are a common issue, yes, but... Daikara? There are no enemies in Daikara that can summon shadows, are there...?

Hm. If I had to guess, I would say the game simply decided it hated you and generated... a blood lich. Maybe an Archlich, probably Blood Lich. Either are technically possible, ie. they get loaded, because they're included in all.lua...

jesus christ though, a Lich in Daikara? How unlucky do you have to be?
