Marauder Unlock

#1 Post by finn »

I am trying to unlock the marauder class. The wiki says you have to deal 600 damage in an attack. Is that 1 attack, as in an attack from you normal attack? Or does flurry also work? I used flurry + willful strike + elemental damage from weapons + wrath of the ancients to do 620, but I did not get the unlock.

Flurry doesn't work. :/ I think this unlock is kind of silly. The best way to obtain it at any reasonable level is to max Venomous Strikes and stack poisons. Flurry and Venomous Strikes are comparable in damage, but the latter does it all in one hit, which qualifies it for the unlock. I don't think that the player should be forced to strategize this heavily for an unlock; you need spoilers not only to understand the clue, but to understand the best/fastest way of achieving it. The others tend to fall in your lap as a matter of multiple playthroughs or getting a certain distance in the story.

Not to gripe too much, but WIldfire and Ice are also frustrating unlocks. I feel like I'm supposed to play a fire mage just so I can start over and play a fire mage.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

Or just play a rogue, 600 damage in a single attack comes naturally to rogues ..

Yeah, been trying to get this unlock in the last days, was going for the Venomous Strike route (with some Lethality and Backstab to ensure I got a crit and it did more damage).
Got somewhat close to it...having normal monsters survive enough hits to get 3 poisons took was a bit of a trouble though.
I did get at least two rogues to level 20+ but then they died.

I think my next attempts will be different - rather than making a Rogue to get the unlock as soon as possible, I'm going to plan long term. Putting points in Venomous Strike wasn't actually being too useful for most fights, compared to other things I could have learned

And as DarkGod suggests, a rogue WILL eventually be able to do 600 damage in a single attack. Pretty sure if I get to level 30 I'll be able to do it even with Venomous Strikes unmaxed.

I *think* you won't have to 'start over' if you're doing this as an Archmage, since the trees will be unlocked(well, you need to spend cat points but still) on your current character.
This mostly applies to Wildfire, as Inferno is quite good for doing lots of damage, while Freeze/Ice storm...aren't. You're much better going Wyrmic if you want to get some serious cold damage going.

I took a quick peek in the characters vault, and these two rogues both unlocked marauders at clvl 22:

Very true. Without specifically trying to unlock marauders, most will do so anyway between clvl 25-35, and it doesn't matter whether they do a poison build, stealth build, stun/crit build, etc.

Hmm, interesting. That wasn't my experience at all, when I was doing a test run in b31, but I was focusing more on flurry than anything else.

I got it at level 18. I stacked a bunch of +crit modifier, and then ran around trying to stack poisons on things. The hardest part was getting two poisons on something. Most things died before that, or I didn't crit.

The failed Rogues in my recent character history died at level 1, level 16, level 8, level 9, and level 18. The last one was a loss to Subject Z and his Flurry of death. The level 8, I remember, was a loss to Bill and his Rush of death. I think there were some others who never made it onto the web history for whatever reason. I still haven't managed the unlock.

Make a halfling rogue, and skip Z altogether. I'll admit Bill is the only boss I stairscum if I start out in Trollmire. (otherwise I wait until I don't need to stairscum him before doing Trollmire). Once I figured out stealth was better at lategame I could get my rogues to level 20ish repeatedly, only having loads of trouble in tempest peak and daikara when the lack of kb resist in my gear meant I died from boulders to the head. Flurry is your friend, too. Get it, use it, love it. Though yeah, venomous strikes for the sake of the unlock.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?

Poison tree works, but I was directed to another style, and it worked fine too. May take a little longer, but you end up with far more opportunities to do it in general.

Max Knives (your going to want to anyways), Stealth, Shadowstrike, and Whirlwind.

I ended up getting it around lvl 22 or so when I unlocked it on a fox. I stacked every single piece of physical power, crit% and +% damage gear you can find. I eventually made the crystal dwarf-steel dagger and got a 600+pt arcane hit, then started routinely getting them with Whirlwind.

My character (Who died shortly there after trying to unlock necro... got the necro dead, but died to the whole swarm of undead... do you need to kill them?)

Just unlocked Marauder against a cold drake. Had to set it up by poisoning it barehanded(otherwise it would have just died), then equipped my dagger(Moon), activated Wilfull Combat and then Venomous Strike. Worked like a charm, got ~640 damage, which is a bit on the low side, actually.

Poisoning things barehanded is a bit of a cheap trick, yes, but it's appropriate considering which classes we're talking about :)
