show off your one-turn-deaths by random unique enemies!
Beginning with near-full health, I've had a few characters die in one turn at the hands of a random unique enemy. Here are a few things that I have found that can insta-kill:
(1) Archers or Slingers "Steady Shot", especially if it's a critical hit, which shalore and halflings often do.
(2) "Disruption Shield". Part of me was wondering why this unique's damage shield was absorbing so much damage, then I realized it wasn't a damage shield when it unleashed a deadly arcane explosion.
(3) "Death Blow". I don't know how powerful this skill actually is, but it was enough finish my character off. I guess the name says it all.
(4) Summoned Giant Spider with 300 Dex. "Spit Poison" did ~550 nature damage per turn for several turns. Not quite single turn death, but close enough! The other summons I encountered weren't kind, either. This was in an orc pride.
(5) Uruivellas Reaver and Temporal Warden - "Flurried" me to death. Next turn (after resurrecting) it killed me with "Rend". I wonder if it was wielding two axes...
I'm sure this list isn't complete, so please share your unfortunate insta-deaths at the hands of random unique enemies!

Are these the guys that spawn in the far portals?

Yes, they can be bosses in farportal zones, but random uniques are also elsewhere in the game. Only one from the list above was a farportal boss ("Disruption Shield"). The others were in the far east or a hostile adventure party in the west.Final Master wrote:Are these the guys that spawn in the far portals?

Last beta, I ran into an adventurer band and one of the adventurers was a paradox mage. Dunno what happened, but I died within one or two spells. Arcane Blade snow giant chieftain bosses aren't as nasty, but they still hurt. Yeow...

Kor'Pul Dungeon 2nd Level, My character is Level 10 and I get attacked by 3 Level 23 Snow Giants.
Re: show off your one-turn-deaths by random unique enemies!
Not a random unique enemy, but Ben Cruthdar: He blindsided me for 100 darkness damage, plus whatever his ego axe hit me with. Add to that the two deaths I got from Z, and one in ritch tunnel... game over for a level 11 yeek mindslayer. There just isn't any way for a yeek mindslayer to stop Z from killing the Wayist, nor stop Z from killing the player with that race/class. He was level 16, I was level 9. Granted, his dark tendrils/trying to guess right path to take in the complex lev 4 REALLY didn't help any. Thankfully, Eidy put me on Maj'Eyal proper when I said "get me outta here!"
Edit: Ignore my whining about Z there. Killed him (barely) with mindslayer #2, still lost the wayist tho. Screwy boss survived a 555 damage knockback. (and was a level smaller, and had crappier egos). Fight probably shouldn't be up to the RNG to this degree though. :/

Random unique orc berserker A uses Throw Bomb - splat, off to beg a second chance from the bloke in the sky, and then ...
Random unique orc berserker A hits Random unique orc berserker B for -2147483648 fire damage - cue the big green line of death, this will be tough.

my poor yeek archmage died to a worm who walks on lake nur (2), mistook it for a green worm mass (i play ascii) and was one shot from full health. it wasn't an unique worm though it seems it just was an out of depth monster
also about adventurer bands, i am not sure but it seems they can have ingredients to complete your alchemist quests... i killed two bands but third one killed me. freeze, fireflash, i run a corner just to meet an arrow to the face, phase door, death, resurrection on spot via blood of life, i killed the mage with kinetic aura but got steady shot from the archer + ice claw from the third party member, a wyrmic, death again. meh, ingredients doesn't worth the risk

Heh. Yeah. Yeeks are too much of a pain to play in the West unless you avoid all adventurer parties and don't explore any vaults. That -5 CON really hurts them, IMO. Adventurer parties are easier to kill for multi-hued wyrm scales than actual GMHWs, so you just need to hide in the trees from archers, or rush them, freeze them, etc. But as a yeek... yeah. GMHW scales are not going to happen unless you're REALLY careful. My last yeek died his last death to Urkie, who was trying to run and at 33% health, because I wasn't sure if I wanted to spike my thermal shield. Had spiked the charged shield, which saved me from his lightning attack... but not his freeze spell, which had just come off cooldown apparently.
Re: show off your one-turn-deaths by random unique enemies!
frankly, that yeek archmage didn't have special problems with health, all archmages have low health anyway (i generally pump them magic and constitution only, not sure if it's right)... hm, before she was one shot :3
also to the adventurer band died another character, cornac mindslayer. they all have one life anyway

Re: show off your one-turn-deaths by random unique enemies!
Would probably be smart until you got health 2/5, then magic/wil until wil is at 30 base. By then magic base should be at or near 60, so once it hits 60, con to 60 too.
For highers it's probably safer to go mag/wil until wil is 30 right at the start, then mag/con. Archmages got waaaay too many ways to spend mana to ignore wil. With my present archmage, I'm half-tempted to spend my lev 20 category point in aegis just to make it better, since I don't have wildfire/uttercold unlocked yet and probably won't get them unlocked with this character. Using, lesse... healing infusion, wild infusion, and 2x manasurge infusion. Got racial power for infusion: regen replacement.
