Each module is set to use a particular version of T-Engine, and DarkGod releases more often than I do, so Qi Daozei isn't marked as compatible with the current version of ToME / T-Engine. It will work just fine, though, as long as you check the "Show incompatible" option.

(There is a bug, I think, in the current version of T-Engine with loading saved games from incompatible modules, so you won't be able to load games until that's fixed or until I'm able to do a new release.)

You can also download the standalone version of Qi Daozei from https://github.com/joshkel/qdz/releases to avoid having to worry about this.

Finally tried this. VERY nice concept, got to the end with a Paesant though it took quite a few tries. Definetely hoping this will keep being developed!

May I suggest enabling autoexplore by the way? Shouldn't take too much work to adapt the existing code.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely plan on continuing development although real life is kicking my tail right now, so it may be a couple of months before I have anything.

Regarding autoexplore - I haven't quite decided what I want to do yet. As hinted by the game story, I'd like to implement pursuit by the Empire's agents and minions, and that will add some time pressure to the game. If this is done, then exhaustively and automatically exploring every level may not be a good idea. Maybe autoexplore would be a good idea until this is done. At any rate, thanks for the suggestion.

I played your game after I saw it won the module contest, and enjoyed it very much! I'm usually too much of a spoiled baby graphics-wise to want to play a roguelike without at least a rudimentary tileset, but the gameplay on this one definitely makes it worth it. Eagerly awaiting your next release, whenever you have the time to develop it!

(Not least because I managed to miss the "only three levels long" bit and spent ages digging out the last level after I fought the minion wondering where the exit went. Durrr.)

I really liked the game, although it obviously could be developed further. The gameplay was interesting and I liked the setting.

The only issue I had is that I was unable to run it as a module (it showed up with "show incompatible" and there was no way of enabling it), but the standalone version worked just fine, even on linux (under wine).

I really hope to see it developed further.

I'm unable to reproduce this problem. You're using ToME 1.1.5 under Linux? Are you trying to start a new game or load a saved game? There is a bug (I think) in current versions of T-Engine with loading saved games from incompatible mods, but starting a new game works fine for me.

I was using 1.0.4, but it worked with 1.1.5.

As a native Chinese, It's happy to see oriental theme in ToME community. Is that project still in development. or its just an experiment?
Your description remind me of Duan Yu(link), one of the three protagonists in ????. He is known as his (although imperfect) mastery of ????(Bei Ming Shen Gong), which enables him to absorb the opponent's Qi for own usage. In Chinese Wuxia novels, the meridian system (??, jingluo), a TCM term, are used to descripe the flowing path of Qi.
However, I felt strange while seeing the title of 'Qi Daozei'. The term '? ? (Daozei)' is strictly derogatory in Chinese, while it have "lovable rogues" in western tropes. Heroes in Chinese novels refer themselves as '??(Youxia)' (or maybe '??(Wuxia)' to emphasize their mastery of Chinese material art), even in the case while they may be outlaws (gentleman thief, rebel force , mercenary or underworld stalwart).

I haven't done any development on the game for a while, although I've been meaning to get back onto it (and your post is a good reminder for me to do so). Thanks!

I don't know Chinese, so I really appreciate any help you can offer. I picked the name by "Qi Daozei" using Google Translate and searching for Chinese language web pages on various fantasy games to see how they handled translation, so I knew I might make a mistake. I wanted a name that both indicated the player characters' nature (they can steal others' qi and are hated and feared by the Empire as a result) and was a reference to the roguelike genre and its originator Rogue (and the rogue character class from games like Dungeons and Dragons, which is where the name from).

Is there a translation that I could pick that would give some of this idea, instead of the more general youxia or wuxia?

Thanks for the link on wuxia and Duan Yu. I'll read up on those more to get some more ideas.

The good news, Castler, is that with every passing day you get more code from:
* T-Engine 1.3
* Veins of the Earth
* (probably) Zizzo's ToME 2 port

that you can poke at and pick apart and use to progress in making QDZ even better!

Yep, Wuxia is one of the most sorely underrepresented creative wells that has been drawn from in Roguelikes thus far, definitely ample room to keep at it and explore it deeper! 8)

In a better world, at least the cRPGs exploring the finery would get the acclaim and further development they so richly deserve:

It's a shame the module doesn't work with current T-Engine build [it kept generating the world, on and on...], I'm gonna have to try the standalone build and keep my fingers crossed for a new version. :)
