I propose a secondary weapon for mages...
The spellbook.
Just what it sounds like. It's a book but it offers a different category of bonuses. Instead of damage type, spellpower, crit and mana and so on, it offers bonuses to category mastery, single skill active talent level, and even single-skill adjustments or bonuses. Finally, even skill transformations.
On top of category and single skill mastery bonuses, I offer some ideas for adjustments or bonuses such as:
1. Increases damage from Chain Lightning if the enemy is wet.
It's not a critical bonus. You can't build around it but if you found it, you might be more inclined to invest in skills that cause the wet effect.
2. Flat cool-down reduction.
3. Sustain protection for ONE skill... attempts to shut down a sustain will fail BUT at half the cost of the mana required to sustain it. In other words, if something tries to shut down a 50 mana sustain, so long as you half 25 mana then you'll lose it but keep the sustain.
4. Transform a skill into a different skill entirely.
You wouldn't need too many options in order to add some flavor and fun to the archmage.

Sounds like a tool-slot type item, really. Good idea, regardless.
