Turn "Winners table" into a "Progress table"

#1 Post by Psyringe »

For statistics freaks like me, the "Winners table" on the homepage is a great idea. However, it only tracks whether or not you've won a game with the given race/class/difficulty combination. Given that the vast majority of my characters does _not_ win the game, my Winners table will probably remain mostly empty for months or even years. Coincidentally, even the Winners table of Darkgod himself doesn't look very full: http://te4.org/user/1/wins ;)

I'm certainly not the only one who feels this way, and I would like to suggest a change that will make this table enjoyable for players who don't win the game by the dozens:

[*] For race/class/difficulty combinations in which the players hasn't won the game yet, display the highest character level that he achieved.
[*] For r/c/d combinations in which the player has won the game, display the number of winners (in a different color).
[/b]

Both values can be displayed in the same table, since the character level is pretty much irrelevant for a character that won the game.

This would allow players a feeling of progress ("Oh no, my shadowblade died. But look, I never had a better shadowblade character in this difficulty setting. I'm getting better!"). The death dialog could even display a respective message. It might also provide players a challenge who already won the game with each combination, but I'm not sure if those even exist. ;)

Another possible addition: The table could then calculate and display the average level that your best characters achieved with a given class or race. Might be too much work to implement though.

What do you think, would such a change be worthwhile? If so, how are the chances that it might be implemented?

On a similar note, I want one that displays wins for arena mode, and progress made in ID. May as well get it all at the same time. And the table still needs to distinguish between adventure and roguelike wins as well. (I don't believe it currently does that either.)

Also, don't mock Darkgod (When you tempt fate, you tend to get smacked. And it won't be DarkGod's open hand, it'll be DarkGod's closed fist!), he's run a lot more characters then that. He just doesn't often play on his account, or he plays SVN. (To test it, I'm sure... ) You really think he wouldn't play the game he made himself more then that?

Actually, I recall DG saying in game chat that he only mastered one class (that is Archmage), and he plays three races because all his Archmages are called Linaniil, and this limits race choice. If you view his characters, there are lots of unfinished ones and lots of winner Archmages.

To be fair, it's not unusual that developers play only some aspects of their game, for several reasons. I just found it a fun way to illustrate how empty the Winners tables tend to be, and I didn't want to sift through hundreds of them to find more examples. ;)

In any case, the Winners tables _do_ look like a great idea, but they are currently addressing only a very small subset of players (those who won the game lots of times). Using them as "Progress tables" as well would make them more fun for more players, I think.
