Achievements for winning for each class

#1 Post by Dekar »

If every class gets an achievement for winning the game, one could track his progress towards winning with every class easier. In addition it would work very nicely with the new first time achievement announcement in chat.

Seconded.

Perhaps, "You got Class" for an achievement title for clearing the game with each class?

In jest, I once said I was playing a class I didn't particularly like, so I could clear the game with each and every race/class combination. Someone suggested that if that was done, Darkgod would just make an achievement so I would have to do it again. This seems like a step in the right direction. Could offer an achivement for each race as well, and another one for each race/class combo.

In support of this, we really ought to also have a completion chart, probably on the website instead of ingame. Something that looks a bit like this:

Code: Select all

That would be a sample chart for one difficulty. Could offer a drop-down box for different difficulties. (I wouldn't approve of tracking wins on different difficulties in a way that overlaps. There's a huge difference between winning yeekstaffzerker on normal, and on insane.) This allows you to show completion of each combination (Bar the forbidden combinations, X'd out on the chart, notably non-dwarven stone wardens, and EQ classes on undead.), and can additionally denote the death mode used, by tacking on a letter for E(xploration), A(dventure) or R(oguelike). Slap a symbol of some kind up in each box with the appropriate letter, and boom, you have a win tracker. Set it on the account page, so we can easily review, and swap between difficulties with a drop-down box, and that does it. Instant win tracker.

From there, perhaps Individual achievements for each class provides slightly more incentive for folks to play more then just a few, along with individual achievements for each race, before a grand achievement for each race/class combo. Perhaps 'Like a Dimwit', in honor of Lord Dimwit who basically did the same thing with Classic Tome.

Ideas for expansion down the line could include a similar (second) chart for the arena, denoting which combos had cleared it there, and a similar chart for the infinite dungeon, noting the lowest depths reached with each race/class combo. (If nothing else, that latter would be wonderful statistical info to study playstyles) (Could even set these on the same page, with a second and third chart under the first, (or second, third, and fourth if you did seperate charts for 30 and 60 wave arena mode) all tied to the same drop-down box for difficulty, just to simplify the number of pages loaded.)

One problem is that the game loses track of characters and some winners are not recorded. This is true for at least 3 of mine: the online character record froze up and didn't update. In some cases this was as early as the 20s, in other cases it was at level 45+. I only know that these are winners because I remember them (and can get to the characters locally).

I've never had an issue, and the only thing I know of that stops updates is if the game slips and loses validation. Typically, saving and reloading solves that issue.

Not sure how common your error is, however. All 3 of my wins have successfully recorded, so...

I've had that problem; this char: http://te4.org/characters/29007/tome/30 ... bb7aebd1be was my first and only winner, but it still says he's at level 29. Kinda annoying, I wish there was a way to force an update since I still have the character.

If someone knows anything about HTML (I do not), making that chart into some sort of more graphically based display and uploading it here could potentially push DarkGod into accepting it quicker. Something that can fit and go on the existing user pages, in it's own tab, with the above mentioned drop down boxs. Creating some sort of graphical icon to fit in each box instead of a text based response is a bonus. (Remember some way to denote exploration v. adventure v. roguelike)

And, in case we decide to expand, bonus points for a second chart on each difficulty for arena (Remember to allow for denoting both 30 wave wins and 60 wave wins) and a third chart for each difficulty to denote highest depth reached in the infinite dungeon with each combo.

I thought about trying to do this myself, but I have absolutely no skill in creating a webpage, and no idea how to go about doing it. If someone wants to make the idea look pretty, you can save DG some time.

*begs for help*

Alternatively, the lazier among you can just constantly nag DarkGod.

I checked online after this happened and was told that it was pretty common.
In particular, one the game loses track of a character it will never recognize it again.
This is actually something that I wish could be fixed, as it makes good ideas (like this one) more possible. It's hard enough to run winners for all of the classes without having to repeat them for cases that you already did...

THe only way for it to stop updating is:
- never go back online
- have taint your savefile with cheat mode
- chagned game files

Haven't done any of those. Well, unless addons can change game files. Or if making a backup of your save counts as changing game files. Or maybe being started on an older version prevents it from being updated somehow. Hrm. I don't think I've done anything wrong though.

That is probably your problem. I don't think ToME likes backups.

A regular backup is fine, but if you play your character and it is updated online and then you overwrite that current save file with the backed up one, then they would be out of synch.

I've never done any of those things - cheat mode, backups, etc. I did have instabilities that would cause crashes with some versions of the game, and the game could get messed up if those crashes happened somewhere important (e.g. last hope, or the town in the east.)

But, as far as I could tell, the problem games were ones where there was some crash at some point. It'd be nice to be able to fix this, as I got truly exasperated...

It also looks as if you are SOL if you win while offline.

*drools* So much work to do....

Any way we can make it denote a difference between adventure/exploration/roguelike? Or does it do that, and I just don't see it yet?

Also, do we need an entire column for 'lich'? Given that only Necro and Adventurer can become that race, seems a bit overkill, though at least seperating lich and non-lich win's for necro is something nice.

Might also want to denote the non-playable classes with some sort of N/A symbol, or blurred out boxes, or something. (Undead on the EQ classes, Lich on classes other then adventuer/necro... unless there's something you're not telling us about the lich becoming a playable race.)
