[SVN] Glowing chests are OP

#1 Post by Un67 »

My current character, a level 17 Dwarf Cursed, has opened maybe six or seven glowing chests (all in Maze or Sandworm Lair) and from them he has gotten a randart voratun mail armor, a randart stralite longsword, a randart voratun war axe, and a randart dwarven-steel battle-axe (actually from a spawned random boss drop). Maybe I just have really insane luck, but this is kind of absurd and game-breaking.

My guess is that maybe it's just those areas, or that you have insane luck. Or maybe it's just that my luck hasn't been nearly as good -- I've never gotten anything better than a tier 3 item, and half of the time it's just a gem. I'm working my way through Dreadfell right now, and still haven't seen anything better than that.

I'd say you had better than average luck as well.

Mine haven't been as good.

Voratun items should be simply impossible at that stage of the game, so good luck alone doesn't account for that.

Huh. Zat mean the assassin lord's kit has been fixed in SVN? It's been not-impossible for th'fellow to drop voratun for a while. Stralite's actually somewhat common.

I would not be surprised if this is DarkGod's way of reacting to complaints that the OoD monsters have not been met with similar OoD treasures.

Add an event type whose main draw is, in fact, both at once. Vaults give a lot of high end normal for the area treasure, chests are a roulette. It makes sense to me.

As to OP...I got a Voratun shield on my Sun Paladin in Assassin Lord's place and I still didn't feel that much more powerful than usual, because it only had okayish egos.. You have to get an incredibly specific item to really notably raise your overall abilities, or a lot of items-doesn't sound like chests are likely to produce either, from this commentary.

So I guess I just used up all my luck for the rest of the year or something? I've always considered myself to be a bit luckier than normal, but :/

Also, here is an image of the stuff I have. (Please excuse me for the horrible job I did screenshotting). It's not like it's super-game breaking, but again I do find it a bit silly to get voratun randarts when even dwarven steel is relatively rare.

It seems there's adequate amount of chance here. You're not guaranteed tier 5 items. You're not guaranteed randarts. Even if you do get a tier 5 randart before level 20, there's a good chance it won't even have useful egos, or it's an item type your character can't even use (like a staff when you're playing as a rogue).

Also, friendly suggestion Un67: use .png instead of .bmp for images if at all possible.

I agree that it does seem to be pretty random, and that my small sample size is probably not really enough to make any real deductions. As for the .bmp thing, I actually usually do save my pictures as .pngs but I was just in a rush when I posted this one and wasn't really paying attention.
