Something that's bugged me for a while now about necromancers is that their undead summons are random. Can't a necromancer even decide if he's investing his tortured souls into fresh bodies or just bones (or maybe even just as a spirit, that'd be nice)? With that in mind, I've had a few ideas I've been toying around with concerning the necromancer summoning system.
1: Divide the summons up by body type. This is probably the most in-game consistent idea. It would replace the necromancer summoning spell with two to three different spells, each of which would summon one (maybe more) undead of a specific body type (skeletons, ghouls, or maybe spirits). The specific type of skeleton, ghoul, or spirit would be random, with chances of more powerful creatures improving with higher levels in that or maybe another talent. The big problem with this is that only skeletons seem to get ranged types. This means you'd have 1-2 skills to summon melee support, but only 1 to even have a chance to summon ranged support, and that'd be maybe a warrior (melee), maybe an archer, and maybe a mage.
2: Divide the summons up by build type. This makes less sense in-game. Can necromancers tell much about the souls they're using? This would give us three summoning talents, each of which would summon one (maybe more) undead of a specific build type (warriors, mages, rogues/archers). Technically, the creature type (skeleton, wight, ghoul, specter, etc.) would probably be random, but for mages and archers, I think only skeletons need apply.
3: Some of the failings of either could be made up for if the specific creature types a necromancer summons were replaced with a generic skeleton, ghoul, or maybe spirit, which was then tricked out via the new random elites generator. Of course, the undead would be generated at some level below the necromancer's so we don't get random-elite-powered allies.
As for splitting the summoning talent into several talents, I don't think this would actually cause much of a problem (multiple talents to use without waiting for the first to cool down) as the real limit is the number of souls you have and the free space in your necrotic aura. If that logic doesn't hold true, the numbers of undead summoned by each could be limited. Maybe instead of filling out a cone, you target one location in your necrotic aura and undead are summoned around it. At level 1 of any summoning talent, it would only summon 1 undead, but higher levels could summon a few more (maybe 3 max?). Of course, it would mean investing in several different talents to summon them, but if the undead became more powerful just by the summoning talent leveling up, I think it would work.
