Talent icons

#1 Post by Grey »

The subject of talent icons has come up before, as things that would appear on the hotkeys pane instead of the talent name. The problem of course is that there are so many damned talents! Even Shockbolt would take a long time making interesting and distinct icons for every damned talent. Well, there may be some help from someone called Lorc who has made these freely available:

http://imgur.com/a/KBQkz

789 different icons, mostly with a fantasy theme, that can be modified as needed (would look good with different colour stencils). The style of them is perfect for the talents - all easily recognisable monochrome images. They're released under the CC license, so free to use and change as long as credit is given to the original maker (Lorc). Some more info here.

As far as implementation is concerned, I think each icon should have a grey/red filter applied when on cooldown, with a number in the corner saying how many turns left. When unavailable due to lack of resources it should be greyed out. Hovering over with the mouse should give the full details of the talent. Oh, and it should be optional of course, for those that prefer the names listed.

I did all spell talents!
Took me only a few hours (including the time to dev the code to display them, drawing a part of a square is .. fun)

So, who wants to help ? I 'd rather not do the rest, it hurts my arm :<

Those interested need only:
- a few hours of time
- gimp/photoshop
- a willing mind
- very little artistic talent, as even I could do it

I have resized the big monochrome talents list to a good size, so what you'd need to do is:
- set your mind on a talents list (preferably do all of a same kind, like all wild gifts, all celestial, .. for color consistency)
- for each talent, find a good icon in the list
- colorize it with simple colors, according to the general theme of the tree (like fire spells are mostly yellow&red)
- save it as a png file based on the talent name (or short_name if present) like that: all lower case, everything but letters, numbers and _ replaces by _ (so "Essence of Speed" becomes "essence_of_speed.png")

I have attached a zip with all icons set to 64x64.

Howto for gimp:
You usualy want only to edit the white part of the icons, so with any tools you choose to use (probably mostly stencil or blend tool) you want to set the tool "mode" to "Darken Only", then you can just apply the tool over all the image if you want, it wont touch the black zones :)
Easy !

Howto for photoshop:
No frelling idea but probably the same idea

If you want to do it, please be welcome, announce which you'll do here. Oh and I prefer you do less but post them back a few hours later than do all of them and never actually release.

Thanks!

PS: I'll do the infusions/runes

Wowzers! I'll be happy to help once I get home tonight. Will maybe do the Arcane Blade ones and some of the techniques. Perhaps we should have a Google Docs spreadsheet set up with a list of all talents and columns that people can put their names against?

On the colour theme, it may be wise to have a loose theme of colours matching resource pools. Something like:
spells = light blue
techniques + cunning = yellow
wild = light green
corrupt = dark red
cursed = dark grey
psionics = dark green
temporal = dark blue

This needn't be strict (fire stuff should always be orange/red for instance), but a loose adherence could make quick identification easier, especially with more abstract images.

On the interface side it would be nice if there was some notification of which hotkey each talent icon is assigned to. And for items it would be nice if it could show the image of the item itself.

I'm going to try to do something with Wyrmic talents. Shall I fail this glorious quest, I'll report here.

Heh, trying to guess what everything is there... Seems the images are in alphabetical order of talent name.

I'll do the Arcane Combat technique tree later today then, and maybe the two-handed maiming tree. I want my favourite class to have a full set of icons :) Do you want images for passive talents as well?

Must remember that additional icons are needed for automatic stealth, jumpgate jumping, wayist knowledge and undead knowledge... Any others I've forgotten?

Are there plans to use these icons for status effects on the left-hand bar too? Could end up reducing the interface size by a supreme amount.

Let's do talents and then we'll do timed effects perhaps yes :)

Check out the talents in the corresponding lua files to be sure to not miss any

Personally, I'd recommend using the same icon for Wayist and Undead knowledge. They do the same thing, and it's impossible to ever have both... I'd rather be able to glance at my icons and instantly know "oh, that's my knowledge icon" than preserve a meaningless distinction between the two.
