I'd like to see a change that adopts something like the spell and weapon skill system in ADOM, where use of a spell, weapon or skill makes the character more proficient. I'd suggest that characters should gain race-based talents automatically (though Cornac humans would need something else for balance's sake), and that use of spells, detection/disarming of traps, and so on should result in more points in their respective talents. The achievement counters for damage done and monsters killed could be adapted to implement this.
Also, something similar for stat points seems sensible, though I understand if Nicholas doesn't want to borrow too much from other games' features.

Re: Suggested changes to class and generic talent points
This would change the style of the game immensely, and more importantly would encourage scumming. ADOM's system works reasonably well because straight stats aren't all that important (and generally get capped at a certain point), nor are weapon and spell skill levels. In ToME4 a character is entirely defined by its talent levels, and changing the system in such a dramatic way would lead to chaos, imbalance, and a very negative style of gamepaly.

I agree with Grey, that'd make for a tremendously different game - not necessarily better or worse, just not what I think DG has in mind.
It would certainly be interesting to see in a module, though, especially if balanced properly,
