Chance +defence gems to +armour

#1 Post by Grey »

Does anyone use the +defence gems? I was just thinking that they might actually be considered useful if they gave +armor instead. Still wouldn't fully rival the +stat and +resist gems, but would put them on more equal footing at least. +2 armour to your armour piece wouldn't be so bad for those that pick up Imbue Item from an escort, and +10 armour would be nice enough on a ring of the moon.

Either that or make the defence bonus bigger - from +5 to +25 perhaps.

Part of the problem with the defense gems is that there's no way to determine how useful defense is, since its effectiveness depends on a monster's (unknown) attack stat. And unfortunately, once you understand the relationship between attack and defense, you realize that much of the time changing one or the other has zero effect on gameplay.

Here's a post I made on the subject:

Something that should be considered if you make that change is that 2 points of Armor (with the current system) is strictly weaker than 2% of resist all, since they both more or less do the same reduction, but armor only apply on non-magical attacks. (And resist all scales better at high value, as long as its under the cap.)

Well, I'm aware that there are ongoing considerations about armour, and I'm rather hopeful that it'll steer towards armour being different (and better) than % phys resist.

Susramanian, I replied to the referenced topic. I propose a smoother function, so large differences no longer would have zero effect--they would have almost zero effect ;-). Also, my proposed function (a logistic distribution) is almost exactly the same as the current method... just better! (imho)

Here's a plot:
