Add an orphanage to Zigur

#1 Post by Grey »

Would be interesting if there were an orphanage in Zigur, with a sign outside saying

"Here are the children left orphaned by the use of magic.
We are the only ones who can protect them now.
Here is why we fight."

There would be actual children inside, who when the village is attacked by the Corruptors would be hostile but afraid / running away. The blood mages would attack them of course.

This sounds awesome... especially this last part.

Lol, no, if they don't serve a purpose (perhaps a quest, to save one?!) Don't think the slaughtering of kids should get into the game.

It's to add flavour. Currently people take the corruptor quest without thinking of any good or evil about it - there's just "yay, unlock". Would be better if the player felt some real consequences, even if they're not in gameplay terms.

It also adds some role-play reason to play anti-magic (since there's not a big gameplay incentive to do so at the moment).

Personally, I'm a fan of it - serves to soften the bite of the Zigur folks (crazy - but crazy with a *reason*) and really underline exactly how evil the corrupters really are. Might also be cool to include some "rescue the orphans" quests for Zigur - partial replacement for all of the escort quests you have to give up. Obviously, Zigur wouldn't be using teleporters, but perhaps you could have it be a special (small) vault. THe vault contains a mighty Ziguranth warrior (or a few) and a number of orphans. You enter the zone, and find one orphan who's managed to get himself lost (and is terribly scared) and just wants your help getting back to the safety of the camp. It's a bit of a shift from the traditional escort quests - orphans follow you (like Melinda) rather than heading out on their own, and they don't pick fights (or even fight at all), but they're fragile and easily broken.

As an anti-magic user, what could you be offered as a reward, which would compensate for the rewards of those nasty mana users which you told to go away :?:

+Luck? There's no easy source of it in the game.

I'm not sure I like the idea of orphan escorts in dungeons and such though - doesn't exactly feel right. Perhaps instead anti-magic folk should get wyrmic and summoner escorts that others normally wouldn't get?

I have 2 kids... I find this idea disturbing!

Perhaps a compromise... Have the orphanage, once the attack starts, have a message at the end on the orphanage and the kids that have been killed. Don't do the actual killing on screen!

If you're that disturbed then don't do the quest that involves killing kids. The point is to disturb - this is the player's punishment for choosing such an evil quest.

Though I will say there shouldn't be tiles of children :/

I think it's already blatantly obvious that the Corruptor is a badguy. An orphanage full of dead small children should not be necessary to drive that point home.

But I do think it'd be great to have some extra quests that you can do as an antimagic character.

Jon, I too have a kid.

But I really do like this idea, I also like the idea of fleshing this stuff out better in general so siding with the corruptors feels more like a real choice. Something with consequence.

Maybe instead of the orphanage idea the premise could be taken. Have the player later on encounter the father of one of the Zigur's seeking revenge or something along those lines. Have the player lose access to shops as word gets around. Stuff like that.

I think that's a better idea. That's more of a penalty than having to look at some lines of text about dead orphans anyway, and you still have a consequence to your choice.

Much better...

Kids are our future, I would rather see them alive than dead, even in a game! I am sorry if I seem to be awkward here and I don't want to kill off what is a great idea!

What I'd like is an option to turn hostile on Grand Corrupter after the end of the fight. Bastard is more danger to allies then to enemies during the fight. Also I'd like to know what does he drop :) . Idea of children I find completely ridiculous. Why not put little orcs in caves which run screaming or crying over the body of female Necro "Mom wake up!"? That's the same logic.
All kind of "realistic" atrocities out of the scope of the game. If someone want them he/she is free to create mod.
