It would be nice to know what exactly the effect of putting a point into weapon mastery or (for example) sword mastery is. It only says it "improves" to-hit and to-dam respectively but it doesn't say by how much (contrast that with most other effects that say increases damage by 150% or whatever).
Since these points are rather precious, particularly early, it would help to have more detail to know where to put these points (and for example, if you find a lovely mithril [other kind of weapon] is it worthwhile swapping out your dwarven-steel weapon with 5 more weapons points?).

For the second part (whether to use a non-specialized weapon) you can compare damage values in the [C]haracter screen.
I agree that numerical values in the [G]et skills screen would be nice.
Of course without spoiler info on how to-hit works numerical values only give so much insight.

Re: More detail on some weapon skills
One point in weapon mastery gives a HUGE bonus. Something like +20 todam...
Better wait till you get a nice weapon before investing in a specific weapon mastery...
