I can't think of any specific bosses, but could some areas randomly select a boss off a short list? I'm thinking mostly of the Trollshaws here - once you reach the fifth level, you could find yourself facing Bill the Troll...OR Ted OR Bert (or whatever their names are), each with different stats, tactics, and chances of dropping specific items.

I can't really imagine any good alternative bosses for Amon Sul or the Sandworm zone, but Carn Dum could have a Warg or a Giant, the Old Forest could have a snake or a bear boss as alternates, and the Maze could have a thief or an ooze.

Since none of the regular bosses of those areas are important to the story (I assume...i haven't actually got past the Master yet), there's nothing lost, and it adds a little randomness to make those first few dungeons a little more exciting on the second or third or one-hundred-and-third try. I assume there are similar non-plot bosses later that could be treated the same way, but those first six dungeon get a bit worn out after a while, so they would benefit the most.

I really like that idea. The element of the unexpected would make the areas much more interesting.

Bleh, random bosses ideas are easy - just take normal enemies and make them harder!

The Old Forest:

Mother Anaconda
Strong, fast, high hp, summons *lots* of lesser snakes

Great White Wolf
Strong, can rush and stun, causes cold damage with bites. When heavily injured it can phase away and summon other wolves.

Werebear
*Not* cuddly, half-man and half-bear this giant muscley creature can smash your skull with just one swipe. Would be a berserker type, with warshouts and magic resistance.

Towering Honey Tree
Like a normal one but summons more often :P

Trollshaws:

Herman
Troll who learned magic from eating strange mushrooms. Strong and tough like Bill, but instead of stun and knockback it uses manathrust and strike.

Boris
Another of the troll family, but this time a slinger. Can use critical shot and crippling shot.

Pattie
Female troll with a terrible wrath - can summon forest and stone trolls at will, though doesn't have much of an attack herself. 50% stun resistance.

The Maze:

Pestilent Worm Mass
High hp, fast, duplicates often, causes blight on hit. (artifact would be generated on the floor tile beneath it, instead of being dropped)

Minotaur Mage
Uses flame and lightning, and phases about a lot. A real fecking nuisance to kill.

Corrupted Minotaur
A minotaur with several Cursed abilities.

I could try copy-pasting some code for these later, with proper descriptions etc, if you want. Obviously none of them are particularly exciting, but then then neither are the existing bosses in these dungeons for regular players. They just add a bit of variety and fun, especially now we're losing the LotR references and the set artifacts.
