A timeout for that specific effect would still be nice.

Certainly using an item to eliminate it makes sense as the quick answer, but aside from destroy wall spells, what else permanently alters the map?

It doesn't provide any incentive to react quicker, because save 1-shotting them from surprise, they almost always use 'turn area to darkness' as their first move.

It certainly helps clairvoyance to have it work against it, but in general that's just something that says 'Carry this item for this effect that will happen 4-5 times per game, fail to be fatal at all, and will just annoy you with a swap in clairvoyence or standart you hopefully picked up and kept'.
ToME Tips - auto-generated spoilers for ToME. - someone else made. I find super awesome, so spreading as well.

Don't some Cursed/Doomed/Afflicted status effects already disappear if the actor causing them dies?
I think for SOME effects this makes perfect sense - especially ones where the flavour is the person causing the effect is doing a constant effort to keep the effec up - but for things like stunning and bleeding of course it does not make sense.

Also, on the whole ontological inertia thing for darkness - if the darkness is something the demon needs to sustain (not in the 'technical' meaning of sustain in game, I hope you know what I mean), it makes perfect sense that destroying it also dispels the darknes.

From what I remember dispelling an enchantment by killing the caster is actually a fairly common trope in fantasy.

Granted, it's generally about ancient curses rather than localized enchantments like a bit of darkness, but the concept still applies.

I also agree that it's odd that this relatively low level effect can permanently alter a map. So yes, I am in favor of either putting a timeout or making it go away when the demon dies.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I'd like for the darkness to downgrade to normal darkness when it expires/is dispelled/whatever, instead of reverting back to being lit.
Addons: Arcane Blade Tweaks, Fallen Race, Monk Class, Weapons Pack
Currently working on Elementals. It's a big project, so any help would be appreciated. :)
