"How" - I have already answered in the beggining of the thread. Technically the engine is perfectly capable of rendering such visuals - mutations can be rendered as psyblades or any other overlay effect.
"When" - when a mutating race specie evolves.
1) Imagine an amorphous substance that can alter its look at will. You activate a sustainable and it alters your body while active. You can wield extra weapons just like mindslayer currently does, just using extra limbs instead of doing so telekinetially. I am a bit disappointed though that it's quite difficult to visualize properly when multiple weapons are weilded at the same time.
2) Imagine a demonspawn that gains mutations just by levelling up. At level 5 he gets fangs(5% of melee damage dealt is converted into health). At level 10 he gets claws(unarmed attacks cause bleeding and deal extra damage). <...> at level 25 he gets wings that allow him to fly over any push-traps.
3) Imagine a creature with high metabolism that gets progressively attuned to the kind of strategy they use. Melee combatants evolve into beastly fighters, magic users evolve into magic-attuned spiritual creatures.
4) The mechanism can be very similar to current "curses" branch. The only major difference that it is based not on curses that progressively benefit you, but visual mutations.
"Why" - because of nature of such creatures. It can be a specific race with just a few transmuting talents or a standalone class that can be of any race.
I do not like the idea of random mutations like in ADOM or Elona. I prefer mutations that can be triggered on will like transmutations in dungeon crawl : stone soup.
