Still, there's stuff that can just demolish certain builds. Ranged stun (scattering shot, ferex) plus enough damage to kill you before the stun (which hit every escape talent you have ) wears off? I've seen that. Flurry on something with multiple damage-on-hit talents, like weapon of light and TW's folding? Seen that, too. It can do a legit 1k+ damage, and there's a chance the critter toting it'll have something to keep you still while they get close. You get nasty crap like runed/eternal bone giant bosses, dreadmasters, headless horrors, etc, etc. Farportals can just be really incredibly dangerous, especially if you don't have a class build that's borderline broken.

So relying on them for nice randarts is, well, rather risky. Far riskier than large amounts of gold, heh. The farportal's entirely optional, of course, but randarts are so neat. It sucks not to be able to see lots of them, and the farportal's currently the only reliable way of hunting them down. More ways would be nice

Doesn't the issue arise though, of the lack of ability to get gold, without doing far portals? I mean, npcs don't regen anymore, and there are only two sources of gold after a certain amount of time, and that's [realistically] adventure parties/orc ambushes, and the far portal. So, regardless, if you are going to want to order a randart, you are going to have to go through these other steps that could [and in some cases always] drop a randart or other item that is better. I just kind of see this as making another stop point in a circle of dead end development.

My last archmage winner did 7 or so farportals, and even then she rushed them to the bottom, and yet she had well over 7k gold

Heh, my last archmage winner didn't do most optional zones, including the Maze, Old Forest, Daikara, other racial starting areas, etc. Hence, I didn't even have the transmogrifier chest, and, as a mage, I didn't have the strength to haul around a bunch of extra equipment. I only did the main zones in the far east. I also purchased a lot of equipment from stores (probably approx 2000 gold)...

Nonetheless, I still finished with 3269 gold . I probably have 1000+ worth of gems, too.

So yes 5k doesnt sound that bad
