On the forum there have been and there are currently some challenges where you voluntarily limit yourself on certain ways. An idea is making this into a starting game option and the game doing the limitations. This way you cannot make any mistake. This should be marked on a character dump file and on any achievements record. The really hardcore player can select several challenges at the same time.
Some suggestions:
* No artifacts (except the artifacts that one must use for the story to progress but these are nerfed of any other power)
* No ego items
* No potions (similar options for other equipment classes)
* No healing potions
* No gold (any story obstacle having a gold requirement removed)
* Pacifist (does not affect summoned monsters or golems...)
* No restoration from resting in dungeons. This also includes restoring from just resting one turn at a time. So you must use items or magic or go out of the dungeon to restore.
Challenges (like no artifacts) as starting game options

In Nethack, all challenges are assigned at the start of the game, and silently removed as you violate the restrictions..

It it not easy to violate a challenge that you intend to follow by mistake? Like picking up an item or attacking a monster that you should not?Repton wrote:In Nethack, all challenges are assigned at the start of the game, and silently removed as you violate the restrictions..

Oh, sorry, I missed the bit where the game is preventing you from violating the challenge.
