Ok, so I unlocked skellies as a race type earlier today and made it out of the halls with a fighter. I have to say the dungeon was very thematically suited to the race and I though it added a lot to the starting game, though it was a bit long.
So after some further thought I think a themed starting mini-dungeon for each race/class combination would be super cool. Nothing huge maybe say oh... 2 or 3 lvls deep. I liked the idea of having to work up and out before starting the game in the big world and think that should be kept across the board, especially considering they'd be short. This would also help for some those characters that are hard to get off the ground initially <cough>rogues<cough> since you could tailor mobs and loot to fit the class/race. In that regard I'd make them inaccessible to other characters for balance/exploit sake. (only if you start there is it on the map) Overall I think it would add some immersion and flavor to the game experience. It also would relieve boredom if you had a string of bad luck and lots of restarts since you could pick something else to play and get a different area to work with.
I realize that each race class combination is a lot of them, so maybe each race starts in the same place but the level populates depending on class, or maybe each class has different objectives to achieve. Rogues may only need sneak by a guardian to steal a key to escape through a locked door, where a fighter would have to go the long way through a gauntlet etc.
If people like this idea maybe we could pile ideas for areas in this thread.
