Better rest and autoexplore mechanics.

#1 Post by Loco15 »

I'll go straight to the point. I didn't know how much TOME's resting and autoexplore mechanics sucked until I tried both of these addons:

https://te4.org/games/addons/tome/improved-restauto
https://te4.org/games/addons/tome/faster-runrestexplore

After that, I forgot just how much it sucked until I tried the beta to try out the new necromancer.

It sucked so bad I had to quit. Personally, I'm not sure about other people's experiences, but with the toaster of a laptop I have, autoexploring the map can take like five solid minutes, without taking into account monsters. And resting for anything more than ten turns takes an eternity and a half.

I'm no coder, so I apologize if I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt adding even only the single feature of controlling these modes FPS's to vastly speed up the process would take much time, at least not compared to most of any other feature addition. Most of the work is already done anyway.

I vote for this feature to become standard in the core game, as I seriously consider it of great importance in helping those who have slower computers, and while I loathe to think of it, there is always the chance the addon may stagnate and die some day, for whatever reason. If that did ever happen, I think a lot of people would be crushed, and for me at least, this great game would become almost unplayable.

Thanks a lot for your work and your awesome game, DarkGod. I hope you read this and at least think about it. I can hardly think of it as some kind of game breaking, cheat, lore unfriendly addition or what have you.

I'll take a look, but .. 5 minutes to AE the map ? Something is utterly wrong somewhere and no potato computer can be that bad ..
I'll hazard a guess that some video drivers are bonkers and OpenGL is not actually processed by the GPU at all but by the CPU.
Hum .. when you are on an empty map (all creatures but you dead), is resting & AEing still very very slow ?
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD

Sadly I don't have TOME installed, as I had deleted it and am now in the slow process of downloading again 1.6.7, so I'll have to answer by memory alone.

Perhaps five minutes was an exaggeration, but I distinctly remember that I could almost watch as my character moved tile per tile, faster than I manually could but still at a rather pathetic speed. I think it was faster to auto explore when there where no enemies left? Sadly, my strongest memories are how utterly slow it was to auto explore Trollmire and Norgos Lair, to the point that it got so boring that it bordered on annoying. I shudder to think how it would have been on The Maze.

And resting...hmmm, I vaguely remember that while slow, it wasn't half as annoying, except when it wanted to recharge the rod of teleportation or whatever its called, and when I removed the manasurge rune from my necromancer thinking I could get away with my low mana dependency, dropping mana regen to 0.5 and now taking forever and a half to get full (Now THAT lasted a long ass while), to the point that I just disabled resting before auto explore.

Regarding OpenGL and what not, I'm reasonably sure that while my intel drivers are updated as they can be, my OpenGL support is quite outdated, at the very least. If OpenGL is the problem, do you think using Mesa 3D would help? I tried on another old school game I wanted to try out but recently stopped supporting certain old features (Naev beta), and while it worked, it played noticeably slower than older versions and had terrible font.

Sorry if my comment is not very helpful, but as I said, I can only give vague impressions from my memory, as I'm not in the habit of constantly checking the framerate or timing of everything, and said memories are tinted by my annoyance.

Suspect something is wrong on their end...but really would like to see those added mainline at some point. Obvious bias on my end :)

I think at least the faster framerate stuff is just a brilliant QOL though. I can't see any reason not to use it.
ToME Tips - auto-generated spoilers for ToME. - someone else made. I find super awesome, so spreading as well.
