clean up dead characters

#1 Post by Brcz »

I'm using mac os X (high sierra). I noticed awhile back that I had a massive collection of dead character files in my Library. I'm referring to the folder that contains their maps and so forth. Casual users wouldn't realize that this collection accumulates even after their characters have died, especially since the Library folder is typically hidden so a lot of people wouldn't even know to look for it. While each character is several MB, that adds up over 1000 hours of gameplay.

I'd recommend a way to clean up dead character folders within the game GUI itself.

Just curious as to what the folder size of your "saves" folder is.

For reference, mine has 28 characters and that takes up about 207 MB on my disk.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.

to clean up dead characters via the GUI is as easy as this:
in the load selection menu, have a checkbox near the bottom that says "Show dead characters"
the names of dead characters would be in red, and when you click on them, "Load Character" would be greyed out(and do nothing), but there'd also be another button on the load screen that says "Restart as this character" with an "Are you sure?" prompt if you click that button with a character selected
you could also take a not-dead character and use the restart as this character option, though of course there'd also be an are you sure prompt then too
iirc, you can delete characters from the load menu anyway, so if dead characters could be listed there, then you could delete dead characters from the load menu too

Another button to delete all dead characters in one click would be nice too. Just make sure that it doesn't delete living characters with the same name.
