So this is an idea to help balance the variety of weaker runes and infusions. My basic premise is that some effects are simply not strong enough to compete directly with the current inscriptions. Almost every build uses 1-2 condition removal, 1-2 heal/shield/heroism, and 1-2 move/teleport/controlled phase doors. So my solution is as follows: Allow players to unlock inscription slots 6-8 as lesser inscriptions that only allow the less used runes and infusions. This opens up some new ways to use existing effects which are quite good but not good enough to compete with the best inscriptions.
Lesser infusions could include: Phase Door runes, non-condition removing versions of attack runes, invisibility runes, vision runes, sun infusions. Optionally the artifact inscriptions could also work.
This opens up some interesting new build possibilities, but would still tie the inscription slots to category points, making these options appealing for classes that only need 1 category unlocked, and also making a lot of interesting options for Cornacs and non-anti-magic mindcasters.
While generally unlcoked trees are more useful I think that given the saved generic/class points, and the fact that some classes need fewer unlocked trees. that these infusions could still find a meaningful niche in the game without having to completely rework or tack on additional effects to inscriptions that already have a clear purpose.
Idea: Lesser Inscription slots

Re: Idea: Lesser Inscription slots
I had an idea similar to this, but I also classified insidious poison as a lesser inscription.
I think the player should start with one lesser inscription slot, and be able to spend one cat point to unlock two more.
