Presenty default inventory view is to display all items.
I do not think it is a good idea. Probably the worse.
Actually, nobody is really interested to have such a view (except maybe in the first few levels) and people first action is to switch to what they want to see (armors, transmo chest, etc).
The problem is that in the late game people tend to have MANY items, especially gems (that are weight 0), jewellery and charms (that are light and may serve one day or another), etc... Add to that a big transmo chest after a large level and there may be 200+ items in the inventory. The gross result is that the game has to sort and analyse these items for display and opening the inventory may take several seconds on a not-so-recent computer (I noticed almost ten seconds, but I am not very good at housekeeping and only sort when I am overburdened). Besides that, inventory display is almost instant for, say, the weapon or armor tab.
Having an other choice as the default is very simple and will improve the overall perception of speed of the game, without reducing functionnality. The best would be the last tab opened by the user, memorized somewhere in the savefiles, but a fixed choice (say weapons) would already be an improvement over present situation.

Re: Change default view of inventory
I'm not sure about your premise... I never use the other inventory tabs. Then again, I don't keep spare weapons or other equipment in my inventory. Typically, the only things I keep are quest items and a digger. Along with any other items that give me passive bonuses while in my inventory. But I keep the default "All" view all throughout the game.
To your actual idea, yes, I agree that it would be nice to have the ability to customize the default option in the inventory for those of us who like to keep stuff around.

And it was such a good idea...
