As we all know the games without nothing to achieve are boring. ToME shines in this department having all kinds of nice stuff to unlock, but the will be gained by people who play the game, eventually so that there's nothing more to unlock.
I was thinking if some new achievements could be added. Some that would be hard to achieve and give some rewards for achieving them.
There's the wildfires unlock for 1 million for damage. How about giving 0.1 wildfire mastery for 10 million fire damage?
Same could be used for dodges, giving 0.1 mastery bonus for Rogue classed characters for dodging 100 000 times.
This way people who persistently play their favorite classes would be rewarded for it.

It might be cool if birth options are revamped in some way, adding more options to unlock with some minor bonuses. Definitely easier than making new classes/trees to unlock all the time.
Possibilities are almost endless, I dig this.

Re: Extra hard achievements with rewards
I'm all for this. Possible achievements for long term progress could also include things like total farportals done (globally on all characters, and singly on one character), exceedingly high totals of enemies killed. And even an unlock isn't really a requirement, though cosmetic unlocks are practically endless in possibility. Could unlock new character tiles for assorted achievements. (That alone could give us dozens of new goals to shoot for.)
Other possible cheevo suggestions:
Global number of Athamathon kills.
Global number of randboss kills. (or unique kills. Seperate, or combined?)
Global number of game clears.
Cheevo for winning EVERY CLASS. (Suggested name: 'Master of all Trades'.)
Cheevo for winning EVERY RACE. (Suggested name: '???' Anthropologist maybe? Something about the study of the races?)
Cheevo for winning EVERY CLASS, as a member OF a given race. (For instance, win EVERY class with a halfling for the achievement 'halfling mastery'. Win every class possible with skeleton to get 'skeleton mastery'.) (Suggested name: '*foo* mastery'.)
Cheevo for winning EVERY RACE, as a member of a given class. (For instance, win rogue once with every single race for the achievement 'rogue mastery'. Win with every possible race for summoner to get 'summoner mastery'.) (Suggested name: '*foo* mastery'.)
Cheevo for winning EVERY POSSIBLE RACE/CLASS COMBO. (Current number without addon's, 222) (Suggested name: "Dimwit's Apprentice") (For those who don't know this origin, look up "Lord Dimwit" on the classic ToME ladders.)
Cheevo for amassing a certain amount of artifacts/randarts in the fortress storage room. (Seriously? How is this not ALREADY an achievement, for those hoarders in us all?) (Suggested name: Hoarder)
Interesting semi-cosmetic unlock ideas:
Unlock a kill counter for reaching a certain global total number of kills, viewable after turning on/off in options. (Nice to be able to look at a glance and say 'I've killed 17 billion creatures! Gaze upon me ye mighty, and TREMBLE!')
Unlock new custom tiles. (Could do thousands of these, technically.)
More hair colors. (We are stuck with redhead or blond halflings? Why not brown, black, grey... Or even go the dye-job/anime route, purple, green (DRUID!), blue, etc.)
I'm not sure I like the idea of mastery bonus unlocks. Seems like that would provide an advantage forcing players to earn certain achievements to get appropriate skill levels, if it required that to earn the mastery we have now. IF we give it as a bonus, it tends toward power creep issues. Or just plain becoming overpowered. Not sure on the balance issues of that.

Re: Extra hard achievements with rewards
I dislike the idea of hackable unlocks which make the game easier, like the suggested Mastery bonus. Right now, Achievements which unlock things can be hacked, but such hackers still need the skill to USE what they've unlocked.
That aside, the more Achievements the merrier.
Just don't use them to make the game easier.
More hair colors, for example, would be awesome.

Yeah, 0.1 mastery Is almost like a category point.
I like your ideas Crim. That's something how it could be.

What Doctormull said, basically.
There's nothing wrong with some unlocks that make the game easier, but you have to remember that some players just hack open everything(to the point where there's an addon for it).
So, unlocks that make the game easier, but require more thought to use, like unlockable categories, work a lot better than just permanent bonuses do.
Of course, you could make a bunch of powerup unlocks and then limit them to certain difficulties, like only for people playing Easier and/or Exploration... That seems harmless and fun.

Or you *could* have mastery upgrades, which only apply to later games that you start at a difficulty level one up from where you earned the achievement--eg normal --> insane (and maybe also adventure --> roguelike).
