Infusion: Vine Lasso

#1 Post by HousePet »

Works like Bone Grab, but instead of pinning, it chokes the target.

Not sure exactly what the choking should do.
Silence seems over the top.
Maybe something like that Slippery Moss.

I've always thought silence was a bit over the top anyway... Something with a percent for spell failure would work better. I mean, don't get me wrong, especially at higher levels, it should be a big percent, possibly even 100, but a percent chance of failure doesn't break completely spell based classes as much. I don't think silence is going to change, so I propose that "choking" be a status effect, kinda using the insomnia rules, something like 20% for each turn that the effect will be in play. 5+turns, it would be the same as silence, but lower than that, it would be weaker. I'd like that for silence, but that, with something like a 3 or 4 turn effect would work for your vines.

There's already a built-in system where opponents can cause you to suffocate. I suppose Vine Lasso could do that to opponents.

Unless enemies can't suffocate, never seen it happen.

Enemies can suffocate. You can drown neutrals in towns, for example, by repeatedly swapping places with them until they end up in water. If you're low level and there are some rare neutrals around, this can even get you respectable xp.

Sounds easy enough to make; Oozing horrors already have a talent that functions exactly like that, so it's really just a matter of copy/paste.

Yes please, I definitely want the most awful part of oozing horrors to show up randomly on every orc in the prides, thank you.

Alright, if you insist, I'll have to make sure it gets into the next version :)!

NO WAIT HE WAS KIDDING NOOOOO -

Although I actually think something like bone grab in infusion form would be fair game, as melee classes and enemies are so easy to kill with spells right now if you can avoid rush. Just...no silencing, please. It's what puts the horror in Oozing horrors.

Do keep in mind that suffocation takes a long time to actually kill things, at least as far as I recall. Not sure exactly how many turns it takes if you have 100 air to start with, worth testing. When suffocation finally does start the damage is very rapid and totally unblockable/irreducible, so it might be overpowered if used on bosses.

Much interesting to get implemented Oozing horrors,
but pretty easy to do copy/paste...

Hence my suggestion of a Slippery Moss like effect.
Or just use the Slippery Moss effect.

Sounds more like potential charm than a infusion.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion.
Charms and Inscriptions don't appear to have any apparent pattern about what ability goes where. :P

The way I've come to understand it is that Infusions correspond to effects commonly found on potions in other roguelikes (healing, clearing status, speed etc) whereas Inscriptions are the ToME equivalent of Scrolls (Teleportation, direct damage, shielding etc). Growing a plant lasso is is functionally related to the latter but thematically to the former, which leads me to believe an artifact Charm would be a better fit.
