Rename and Re-Describe difficulty levels

#1 Post by Sradac »

So this is purely an aesthetic / lore / mood enhancement, but I felt like posting it anyways.

Change the names and description of difficulty levels. Easier, Normal, Nightmate, and Insane just feel so generic to me and do nothing to suck me into the world of Eyal. I think this could be a way to not only attract more players because of the "unique" approach to difficulty levels, but might actually let me let myself play "Easier" without feeling like a noob :lol:

I only have the first 2 fleshed out though, so feel free to expand on this or modify it :)
So, my ideas below.

Easier - > Legend / Legends / Legendary

Description:
Take on the role of a Legend of Eyal. A person to be recited in future tall-tales, myths, and fairy-tales. Legends are people of truly Legendary accomplishments. Able to survive encounters and perform feats that seem impossible for any mere mortal to have accomplished. From destroying entire armies without breaking a sweat, felling massive creatures with a single blow, to saving an entire world in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately for these individuals, for some reason no evidence is ever left behind to prove or disprove their existence, as such they can never permanently alter the world in any way for future adventurers to appreciate (No Unlocks).

Examples of real world legends: Hercules, Paul Bunyan.

Effects: Same as Easier.

Normal - > Hero / Heroic / Heroes

Description:
Take on the role of a Hero of Eyal. Heroes are people that rise above the rest of their Race and permanently alter the world around them. Songs are sung of their exploits, books are written, and memorials are created. Able to overcome near-death situations, accomplish unthinkable feats for a normal person, and rally mortals to truly believe in their cause. While their deeds may be exaggerated at times (and the morality of their decisions could be debatable), there is irrefutable proof that these individuals existed and performed heroic feats, as such the deeds of Heroes will always be witnessed and remembered by future adventurers (Unlocks are Possible).

Examples of Real World Heroes: Achilles, Genghis Khan, George Washington, Julius Caesar.

Effects: Same as Normal

Nightmare: No ideas yet.

Insane: No ideas yet. Maybe a form of a cautionary tale of what NOT to do? :P

Nightmare -> Common man

Once in a while a common man rises up to face the horrors beset on the world. Not gifted with the physical or magical prowess of heroes the horrors of the night are even more dangerous. Given the inhuman challenge the common man takes upon himself, is deeds are sung even more feverently. His victories etched in stone. Tales of his adventurers are told and retold around campfires to times end.

Insane -> Disease/plagued/sick/

With a body cursed by uncurable sickness, and no future to hope for, only a quick death in a dark dungeon is expected. Crippled by pain, even exploring the garden outside is dangerous. Surely only a confused mind would turn to adventures in a condition like this. With Gods and humans alike taking bets on how fast the sick will cease to exist, even the most minor of accomplishments will be rememberd as Godly achievements.

*This last one gave me an idea. Could it be made a difficulty setting like normal, where you get a debuff for each character level, so that you are pressured to get through the game at the lowest possible level? Would tie in with sick/disease/plagues... on borrowed time*

This doesn't make a lot of sense since much of the setting change is relating to the world rather than the player. So it's like being in a nightmare, etc.

Then it should be:

Easy -> Fairytale/Pixar movie
Normal -> Adventure
Nightmare -> Thriller
Insane -> (survival) Horror
