Checklist: 10 Rules of Handling a Dangerous Monster

1. DETECT the dangerous monster before it can see you!
2. KNOW what the dangerous monster can do to you!
3. AVOID the dangerous monster that seems too dangerous!
4. SURVIVE the damage a dangerous monsters does to you!
5. RESIST the status effects a dangerous monster tries to cause you!
6. REMOVE the status effects a dangerous monster succeeds in causing you!
7. DEAL WITH the status effects from the dangerous monster you can't remove!
8. ESCAPE the dangerous monster if you have to.
9. KILL the dangerous monster if you can.
10. RECOVER from the dangerous monster you've killed or escaped from.

Please include this piece of "lore" in ToME4. It's a great code to live by, especially if the RNG has been smiling on you when it comes to equipment and escorts, or maybe you've made it farther in the game than ever before, and you're on your very final life or playing on roguelike. It's a list to consult when you just don't want to die yet another stupid death.

When a Cornac Archer finds this note on the dungeon floor she comes to think of her Track talent which she has been sloppy with remembering to use lately. She sees that past the very next corner is the Minotaur of the Labyrinth! Does she know what he can do to her? Can she avoid him, or failing to do that, survive his initial attack? And can she resist the debuffs he can cause? If not, does her Wild Infusion cure it? Or can she just wait it out while killing the minotaur, or escaping him should she find out that she's losing the fight. And how well can she recover from the battle? Will she need to use up some vaulable and nigh irreplacable resource in order to win? Will she be weak and vulnerable to other monsters after the fight? And what about those other monsters, does she know what they can do to her? Does she know if they can be avoided? Is she able to...?

I would revise it like so, to prevent it from breaking the fourth wall.

1. SENSE the dangerous monster before it can sense you!
2. KNOW what the dangerous monster can do to you!
3. AVOID the dangerous monster that seems too dangerous!
4. PREVENT the attacks a dangerous monster tries to do to you!
5. HEAL the damage a dangerous monster succeeds in causing you!
6. DEAL WITH the damage that you can't remove!
7. ESCAPE the dangerous monster if you have to.
8. KILL the dangerous monster if you can.
9. RECOVER from the dangerous monster you've killed or escaped from.
