This is yet another "change wands" thread from me, as it still annoys me how badly they fit in with other game elements.
Idea is to make wands auto-recharging, same as the spydric wand at present, but don't let them be activated from the pack. They would have to be in the tool slot to be used (and to be charged, with the new activates charging system). This expands the toolslot usage from its current inappropriate one of being a free passive stat boost from a pickaxe you almost never use. So you'd have to make a hard choice between having that constant pickaxe bonus or having a readily charged teleport wand available. Wand egos could be changed to include more charge capacity, faster charging, and even some passive bonuses.

I also agree that wand need some changes. The most useful wands in the current mechanics are the wands of teleport - I also used some blasting wands and some wands of illumination, but in very niche situations. The niche wands are , well, niche and suffer from the potion syndrome; store everything and never use them. The teleportation wands are arguably too strong, because they save you either an inscription slot or they allow you to equip more optimal gear.

Made an addon that does this. I haven't tested it for balance, but it does work, and would be a good starting point if someone wanted to make a real effort of reforming them.

Wands still seem a bit out of place. If we want to get rid of consumables (scrolls, potions, ...) then we need to get rid of wands too. Want teleportation? Use the rune.
If wands require a tool slot, then there should also be a cool-down before using it after equipping. This is to prevent people from carrying a bunch of wands and then doing a two turn teleport (turn 1: equip, turn 2: use wand). The cool-down could be something like 20 turns.
Equipping a teleportation wand is going to be a no-brainer. (Do I want +2 str from my pickax or the ability to escape death? Tough choice.)
