Does the benefit apply if you are wearing NO armors that are leather or lighter, or does it just check your main body slot? Can I wear an iron helm, or metal gauntlets, or heavier boots and still get the bonus?

It only checks the main armour, which must be light or cloth. Helmets, boots, gauntlets, etc. can be as heavy as you want and you'll still get the bonus.
